Alisha read the text from Jabari and giggled.

“That’s like the fourth time you’ve done that,” Michelle said, seated across from Alisha in her kitchen Saturday morning.

She smiled. “I can’t help it.” Since they had made up two weeks ago, he’d come by the house almost every evening and spent time with her and the kids. He carved pumpkins for Halloween and organized a little party for Cory, Lia, Jade and a couple of other children who had been at Jade’s birthday party. She had opened up to him more about her fears and shared what Morgan had said. Jabari had bluntly told Alisha, “If she can’t do it, I’ll find a lawyer.” It made her love him all the more.

“Well, as your best friend, I’d just like to say I told you so.”

She had missed being with her friend this way. She grasped Michelle’s hand. “I’m sorry I’ve been so distant.” She had shied away from talking to her because she didn’t know how Michelle would respond to the fact that Alisha had hurt Jabari.

“It was hard not being able to be there for you like always, but I understood it. Girl, Chris almost had to tie me down a couple of times because I was on my way over. You and Jay were both miserable and I couldn’t do a thing about it. But I’m so glad you guys worked everything out.”

“So am I. I love him.” Their night with the oil flashed in her mind and her body heated. True to his word, they had used every drop from both bottles.

“Are you ready for your weekend getaway?”

“Yes, but he won’t say where we’re going. I appreciate you taking care of Corey and Lia.” They would be leaving in a few minutes. Jabari had told her to pack a few outfits for day and night and said the temperatures would be somewhere between seventy-five and eighty-five. Because she had no idea what he had planned, she had ended up with enough clothes to last a week.

“Oh, you know I love having them over.”

“You ready, baby?” Jabari asked, coming into the kitchen.

Alisha stood. “Yes, as soon as I say bye to my babies.” They all went into the family room, where the three were dancing along to a Disney song. Corey and Lia barely acknowledged her hug and kiss and kept right on dancing. “Well, I guess they’ll be fine without me,” she said with mock sadness.

Jabari chuckled and kissed her temple. “That’s all right. I love you.”

She smiled up at him. Hearing him declare his love now did not evoke the fear it had previously, but only brought her a sense of peace and contentment.

He escorted her to the car, started the engine and pulled off.

“You’re still not telling me where we’re going?”

“Nope,” he said with a wide grin.

She ran her hand up his thigh. “Pretty please?”

He clamped down on her hand and chuckled. “Quit trying to tempt me. I’m not telling, so just relax.”

Alisha rolled her eyes, but she couldn’t stop smiling.
