Chapter 8 - Storm

Bright silver moonlight illuminated our way. We waited for a full moon to launch our attack. The whole pack turned out. Raoul, my father and pack alpha led the throng. Aatto's huge black wolf galloped at his side. Meadow and I raced behind him, behind us dozens of werewolves and their mates, some shifters, a witch and a vampire who only feeds on animals stampeded to Ember's secret mountain hide out. Mother stayed behind to guard Rose.

"Ember is mine," I snarled.

"No, " my father said, "I am the alpha. I take Ember."

"And I am the one he trained. I am the one who bested him in sparring matches. The dragon is mine."

He didn't reply. I didn't care. Ember is mine. I want to look in his blood red eyes and witness the panic when he realizes he's trapped. We hit the mountain hideout at three am, still under the light of the full moon but after Ember's whisky drinking. My former cohorts will be half drunk and passed out. They won't know what is on them until it's too late. My father struck first, smashing his way into the cave I used to call home. Hot on his haunches, I rushed in, tearing past the drowsy, stunned guards to Ember's chambers.

Teeth bared, my muzzle scrunched, I crashed, claws first through the old oak door to his chamber.

Ember jolted from his bed of feathers and fur, locking eyes with me.

"The wanderer returns," he smirked, pacing a circle in front of me. "I assume you've brought evidence of your target's death?"

"No, it's your death I'm bringing."

"Is that so?" He crossed his arms, raising his brow high in amusement. I sank back, ready to pounce. My claws dug into the cold, stone ground. Ember's eyes flashed, his skin turned to scales, his teeth elongated into thick, razor sharp white fangs. Huge, majestic wings sprung from his back. He shifted, as I prayed he would. Ember's chamber, as impressive as it is, isn't big enough to hold his dragon form comfortably. The walls a thick, solid stone are impenetrable, even for him. It's why he picked these caves. They were deep inside the mountain, hidden and safe.

I launched myself at his throat. He lifted a heavy, inky black claw to swipe me away and caught the wall. No space, there's no space for his dragon and my wolf is too strong for his man. My teeth scraped over his scales like they were solid armor. I need not kill him, I only need him injured, weak enough to contain.

Think, Storm, think.

His wings. They're thin and flimsy, as easy to shred as cowhide. I ducked under his belly. Flames of rage erupted from his mouth, I landed on his bed. He tried to spin but got wedged in a crevice. Pouncing onto his thick, long tail I raced up his back and swiped my claw at his sheer, green wing. Ember's head flew back, almost knocking me off his back, a howl of agony tore from his mouth.
