CHAPTER 11

Denali

“It’s been days since I last saw Rixan, and I can’t just leave him there to die,” I say.

I would’ve gone back sooner, but stealing the necessary key from the warden took a lot of work. By work, I mean I baked a tuglan cake tasty enough to distract him so I could pick his pocket. Not that I’ve told my friend about any of that.

She’d kill me faster than Romik.

Yesenia squints at me while tapping her foot. “I took you to see him that one time, but going again is suicide. The guard, Drixil, will know what we’re up to. He won’t trust us.”

“Are you sure? You undid his pants and almost pulled his junk out to make it look like he got some—”

“I know what I did,” she says, her cheeks taking on a pink tinge. “It had to be convincing, okay?”

I huff. “I’m pretty sure it was.”

“But we don’t know that,” she says, her mouth thinning. “You’re assuming he’ll believe he had a ‘good time.’ By the way, don’t think I haven’t concluded that you’ve done something along those lines with the morja. There’s no reason for you to put your life on the line unless it’s worth it.”

“And sex is worth it?”

Yesenia leans close to me, and a smile spreads across her full lips. “Good dick is to die for, bro.”

“Shut up.” Now my cheeks look exactly like hers, flushed and hot with embarrassment. “You don’t have to come with me this time. Actually, it might be more convincing if I go alone and without offering him alcohol.”

She shakes her head, her dark braid whipping back and forth. “No way. Going alone is more idiotic than going together.”

We both exhale, exasperated with one another. I don’t expect her to understand why Rixan is important to me because I don’t fully comprehend it myself. All I know is I can’t leave him to die, not after he saved me from being assaulted by Ulthar. Regardless of what brought on the guard’s attack, Rixan rescued me, and it’s the reason he’s suffering right now.

This is why I pretend to give in to Yesenia’s warning and go to sleep, waiting for my friend to pass out. I’d never drug her, but I can’t say the thought doesn’t cross my mind while I lie on my pallet.

Once I’m certain Yesenia’s fallen into a deep sleep, I get up and creep along the hallways until I get to cell block Rixan’s in. Drixil, the guard from before, stands at his post, his expression one of boredom.

That’s good.

I walk right up to him, and as soon as his gaze lands on me, it narrows.

That’s not good.

Despite the fear surrounding me like a cloak, blanketing me in terror, I keep heading in his direction. It’s too late to turn back now.

“Hey, Drixil.” I don’t have a sultry voice, but I do the best I can. It doesn’t remove the suspicious glint from his eyes, but it does ease some of the harshness in his face when it minutely relaxes.
