Chapter 13

The tunnel grew deathly quiet, and every light went out. Ethan could hear his heart pounding through his implants, and he struggled to keep his breathing low and even as he prayed the kuthrox wouldn’t come to investigate the noise. When another growl, louder and closer, broke the silence, the group behind him screamed collectively.

Kipexo gave Ethan a push towards the humans. “Get everyone back against the walls!” he shouted as he drew his knife.

Ethan ran towards the group. “Back up! Hug the walls!”

The lights came back on, but the humans still tripped over each other to comply. Eventually, they parted into two semi-equal groups and put their backs to stone. There was a rumbling vibration in the ground now, and Ethan turned in time to see a massive shadow in the distance, just at the edge of Andrew’s light. It slithered back and forth as it grew, and it moved far faster than a creature its size should be capable. When it finally stepped into the light, Ethan’s heart sank. There was no way they’d all survive this.

The beast was easily as tall as Kipexo with an extra foot to spare. Though its legs were squat, there were six of them, which the creature used to move like a reptilian centipede. Its head was rimmed all around the top of the skull with small horns, not unlike a triceratops’ bony frill. A short snout poked out just below two deep red eyes that somehow never quite reflected the light. The body was flat, wide, and scaly like a horned lizard. Its tail was easily half the size of its body and resembled a large, prehistoric club. As it came to a stop several yards away, it beat that tail against the floor, and the whole tunnel shook, sending clouds of dust and small stones raining down. When Andrew’s light passed over it, the beast’s skin shifted to a darker tone, nearly blending in with the stone wall behind it.

“Shoot it!” Kipexo shouted. “Aim for the neck.”

Andrew lifted the gun, balancing his light below the barrel as he aimed. The creature’s eyes snapped to Andrew, and its flesh shifted and reflected the light as it began to curl first one way then the other like some dancing snake. Andrew took his shot and missed entirely, blasting off a piece of stone behind the kuthrox’s head. The beast made a warbling, growling sound, and it sounded to Ethan as if it were laughing at them.

The kuthrox leapt forward and spun in the air, swinging its tail forward towards Andrew who tried to jump away but was struck in the shoulder by the weighted, bony appendage. He went rolling across the floor clear behind Kipexo, but, by some miracle, he managed to keep hold of the gun.

Ethan rushed over to help him up, and, when he took hold of Andrew’s arm and tugged, Andrew cried out in pain. Ethan looked down and noticed the bones of Andrew’s shoulder were straining against the cloth of his shirt at an odd angle, and his arm hung loosely at his side.
