Emmy secured her bike on the ferry railing and leaned her forearms against it, gazing out across the shimmering estuary. The breeze whipped strands of hair across her face as she watched the Darling Island coastline get further and further away. Beside her, Tom mirrored her posture and stared out at the water. His shoulder was leaning against hers as they both looked across the sea. Emmy's thoughts swirled, and she smiled at Tom. 'Thanks for dragging me out on this ride.'
'Yeah, it's good to be outside. Cold though!'
'I've been cooped up indoors too much. Oh, so many parcels and emails. The perils of a small business taking off. Ha.'
'Yep.'
'Shame we had to bump into Russell coming out of the lane earlier,' Emmy said, referring to when they'd turned at the bottom of the lane to see Russell, their creepy neighbour, coming the other way. Russell had made small talk with Tom and at the same time had somehow managed to rove his eyes up and down Emmy a few times. Emmy wasn't sure whether or not Tom had clocked it.
He totally had. 'Yeah, I ignored it.'
No flies on Tom, that was for sure. 'Oh, I wasn't sure if you saw it.'
'He wants to try.'
Emmy swooned and, unsure what to say, didn't say anything further. Huddled against the railing as the ferry gate clanged shut and the ferry dropped down into the water, they fell into companionable silence. Emmy breathed deeply, filling her lungs with the cold air and holding her face up to the sky. Once they'd reached the other side, they wheeled their bikes down the ramp behind the queue of foot passengers. When they'd proceeded away from the ferry, they hopped on their bikes and cycled along. Emmy felt the wind in her hair and was so glad she'd decided to leave Love Emmy x stuff, a very teenage Callum, and the housework needing doing behind. She trailed behind Tom along a bike path snaking away from the ferry and felt her jumbled head full of too much to do slowly start to decompress. Tom had suggested they go out for a bike ride and just cycle and see where they ended up with no destination in mind. It worked for her, as she pedalled, got lost in the view, and looked over at Darling on the other side.
From the other side, Darling Island looked very quaint. She could see the sailing club by the water and a row of tall white houses looking out across the estuary. Flags on top of one of the houses flapped madly in the wind, and bright sunlight glinted off their whitewashed backs. As they pedalled along, salt-tinged coastal air filled Emmy's nose, seagulls wheeled overhead, and a much more professional-looking cyclist than her lifted his head in acknowledgement as he whizzed past coming the other way.
The bike path morphed through trees to more of a bridleway running not far from the water's edge. Mostly empty except for a few dog
