Chapter 15

Gemma woke up as the plane touched down. Burrowed against Antoine, after getting so little sleep, she hadn’t been able to stay awake. “I can’t believe I fell asleep. Forgive me.”

He brushed curls out of her face. “I didn’t mind. That’s what couches and boyfriends are for.”

She inhaled, determined not to dissolve into a puddle. “I like that word, too.”

“I’m glad.”

“Now will you tell me where we are?”

“Niagara on the Lake. Later today we’ll go see the Falls.”

“Niagara Falls?”

“It’s more spectacular from the Canadian side.” He quirked an eyebrow. “But first, we have another stop to make.”

A car waited for them, and soon they were on their way to her big surprise.

She scanned every sign. “The Botanical Gardens. That sounds fun.”

“Maybe when it’s warmer.” He helped her out of the car but kept hold of her hand. “This way.”

Only then did she notice the butterfly sign. She shot him a glance.

He grinned. “You said you loved them.”

Minutes later they were inside a miniature tropical paradise, surrounded by thousands of colorful butterflies. Clutching her jacket to her chest, she stared in wonder at the winged creatures.

“Gemma, look.”

She turned and fumbled to open the camera on her phone.

A butterfly with wings colored a vivid blue perched on Antoine’s arm. Opening and closing the wings, the creature posed for an amazing picture.

“This is the best surprise yet.” She wanted to say more but questioned the wisdom of serving up her heart on a platter.

He slipped an arm around her. “I thought you would love it. I was hoping.”

“I do love it. And I love . . . that you brought me here.”

Staring down at her, he swallowed, and his gaze intensified. “Gemma—”

Touching a finger to his lips, she smiled. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many in one place.”

Why had she stopped him? Because dating someone in a different country was bad enough. Loving someone who lived so far away? She wasn’t ready to deal with that.

He returned her smile, a wistfulness lingering in his gaze. “We haven’t been upstairs.”

She tugged him close and rested her head on his chest.

“You okay?” His whisper tickled like butterflies dancing on her neck.

Nodding, she picked up her head. “I want to remember this.”

Two butterflies fluttered in front of her face then circled their way toward the ceiling.

Antoine kissed her hand. “Would you rather remember every word you’ve ever read or every conversation you’ve ever had?”

“Does texting count as a conversation? If so, then my answer is easy.”

“Would you rather spend another couple of hours in a tropical paradise with butterflies or spend one more hour here then see one of the eight natural wonders of the world?”

She hoped she wouldn’t regret her answer. “What are you going to do? Because I’d rather be with you.”

His grin announced that her lack of subtlety had been understood.
