Daily application

Always look out for ways to practice a concept on a daily basis. For instance, you might pick a self-improvement book like How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. One of his concepts is “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” In sales, or any human relations, we see that being “sweet” (nice) toward people takes you further than being a grouch or a critic. Focus on “using honey” all day long. Opportunities will present themselves. You could even focus on one attribute for a week. Benjamin Franklin identified several areas in which he wished to improve himself. One was humility. He carried around a card with the word “humility” written on it everywhere he went for a month. He claimed this helped him to be more humble. According to Franklin, “Humility is the one thing that once you think you have it—you don’t!”

Look for clever ways to remind yourself daily of how you might wish to change. Be creative. Whatever works for you is what’s right. The same principle applies to reviewing information. If you review information daily until it is embodied, you will soon find it difficult to forget. The difference between “review” and “application” is that with application you are putting the information to use, which better seals it into memory. If information you wish to remember does not have a way to be applied, you can imagine teaching it to someone else. In that case, teaching is the application.
