All the dreary summer of 1958, Abraham Thomas begged for his life.

June 25:

“God will look into things,” he wired Eisenhower. “I never have been in no trouble before not even in jail.”

July 1:

“Me and my mother just on the wrong [black] side of the line, that’s all,” he wired again. “If we was on your [white] side, then we would be OK.”

July 3:

“I would have getting my sentence reduce like the other fellow did that was on your [white] side,” he wrote the president. “But since I am on the [black] side that you hate the most I have to die.”
