CROCUS FLOWER

Load the ōfude with tanboku and the tip with chuboku for sakiguma.

1-17. Paint the centre-front petal in two top-down strokes. Beginning at the tip of the petal, apply pressure and follow through the stroke with the tip of the brush tracing the outline of each petal to create the kataguma effect. Lift the brush as you reach the base.

Repeat these steps to build the side and back petals. For the back petals, use a lighter shade of ink to convey depth.

18. With the tip of the brush, paint three top-down strokes in nouboku to signify the receptacle. Use a swift motion and create a tapered ending. Wash the brush, apply tanboku, flatten the bristles using your fingers or the side of the plate, and then paint the lower half of the stem.

19. Switch to the kofude or menso-fude and paint the veins on each petal. Paint the veins bottom-up and centre-outward, in a swift motion to ensure they taper off as they reach the petal margins. Using the same brush with nouboku, paint dark dots to represent the stamen.
