Chapter 10

The next day is spent in a frenzy as the bakery sells out of those iced conversation heart sugar cookies at a frenetic speed.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Lily laments as the rush dies down well after four in the afternoon. “We’ve been going full steam since seven this morning. What gives?”

“I don’t know, but almost all of them said they came from the Haunted Honey Hollow Tour at my mother’s B&B. Maybe she’s running a special today?”

“Well, tell her to warn you next time, or I might be moved to kill and she just might be the one haunting her B&B.” Lily glowers at the mess left in the kitchen.

We’ve got icing and cookies just about everywhere—and some of that is the fault of a couple of hungry ghosts. Once Princess and Taffy figured out they could eat as much as they wanted, they quickly dived into the deep end of the icing tub. I’m not sure if there are any sanitary issues with that, but as far as I can tell the only damage done was to the psyche of the kitchen staff.

“I’ll text my mother and see what’s going on.”

No sooner do I shoot her a text than she walks right through the door like the apparition Lily is determined to make her. She’s donned a hot pink wool coat and has a scarf, gloves, and handbag to match. If Miranda Lemon is anything, she’s forever a walking runway.

“Miranda Lemon,” Lily snaps. “You have no idea what cookie carnage you just caused at the bakery.”

Mom chortles as she covers her mouth. “You’re welcome, ladies.” She gives a cheeky wink. “It was all Wiley’s idea. The man is brilliant, I tell you.”

I lean my ear her way, filled with suspicion. “What exactly was his idea?”

Mom pulls her shocking pink coat tight around her as if she were giddy with excitement.

“Wiley had me hike the price of the B&B tours up by twenty dollars and offer a free cocktail and free cookies. We had three times the tourists head our way. The price bump more than paid for the liquor and Wiley made a ton of money just in tips!”

My mouth falls open. “Mother, that’s—” I blow out a breath. “Okay, fine, that is pretty genius. But you do realize that I don’t charge you for the cookies I send to the B&B.”

“Which brings me to my next point.” She swats the counter with her gloves. “I’ll need twice as many of those cute conversation heart cookies for tomorrow.”

I scoff without meaning to. “You’re letting them eat cookies? I’m shocked they’re coming this way at all. I’m pretty sure I’m getting the losing end of the stick here.”

Lily shakes her head. “I’m not sure about that, Lot. All you have to do is raise your prices a notch. Every one of those people were buying boxes full of them to take back home. I heard a couple people saying they were addicted and couldn’t get enough.”

“You have a point,” I say.
