Chapter

Twenty-Five

Torst

“We’ve never had a Taori here.” Rafe gave me an appraising look. “Now I know why.”

“I can’t allow anyone under my protection to be harmed,” I said, glad his attention had shifted to me and away from Lia. “And I can’t permit these Xulonians to continue operating a hunting moon.”

“What do you plan to do?” Zennen asked.

I readjusted myself on the hard log. “First, I’m going to find Lia’s shipmate. Then I’m going to locate any other Taori stranded on this moon.” I twisted my neck until it cracked. “Then I’m going to take out this hunting operation and make these Xulonians regret ever victimizing other creatures.”

“Now that’s what I’m talking about.” Rafe reached over and shook my arm, his fingers like embers. “Someone who understands revenge.”

“One correction to that plan.” Lia nudged me with her elbow. “I’m going with you to find my shipmate. You’re not leaving me behind.”

I cut her a glance and growled low.

“Haven’t I already proved that I’m tough?” She said before I could voice my protest. “Didn’t I haul your ass from the sea when you were about to drown? Didn’t you say how much stronger I was than you expected?”

“All of that is true,” I grumbled, holding up a hand. “But that doesn’t mean you should risk your life on the surface again. You did not fare well when being chased by hunters, and there are bound to be even more now.”

“He is right,” Zennen said, steepling his hands in front of him as his antennae quivered. “Those without extraordinary strength or powers do not survive up there. If you’ve cut down some of their dimensional incarnations, they will be sending out even more. The citizens who choose to spend their credits hunting other aliens do not like to lose.”

“Then we have one thing in common.” I fisted my hands and imagined killing more of their shiny-skinned avatars.

“And don’t forget the mercenaries,” Lia said. “You won’t only be fighting untrained Xulonians this time.”

“You don’t think I could take some mercenaries?” There were few species as powerful and well-trained as the Taori, and I doubted five hundred years had changed that.

Lia rolled her eyes. “Not on your own you can’t. You don’t even have a blaster, and who knows what kinds of weapons they have?” She turned away from me, her long tail of hair whipping around and hitting my shoulder. “Just because you’re a badass, doesn’t mean I should let you do all of this on your own.”

“He won’t be on his own,” Rafe said, rocking forward and jiggling one leg. “I’d love a chance to fry up some more Xulonians.”

“Did you say there were mercenaries?” Zennen asked.

I nodded. “Whoever oversees this hunt knows I’m here—or suspects it. Their kind destroyed my battleship, but a lot of my crew escaped in pods. I am not sure if they tracked our pods or if they figured out something was wrong when the human females took out an entire hunting party.”

“Which could have happened if I’d had a laser rifle,” Lia muttered.
