ELIJAH

The sun’s rays radiating through the window shine down on my face, and I grimace. Why is it so bright today? I thought it would snow more. After being tortured on the road with days of snow, it’s suddenly sunny? So much for the weather forecast then.

I sit up groggily and rub my neck. My body is stiff even though I slept on the bed. I sniff, and the itch to sneeze tickles my nose. I knew I’d catch a cold.

I sigh and stare up at the ceiling blankly. The wedding is today, but I don’t feel like going. After coming all the way out here for it, I don’t feel like attending. What’s the point anyway?

I get off the bed and move to the bathroom to wash my face. There are dark circles under my eyes. I look tired. I turn on the faucet and splash some water on my face.

I wonder how Ro is doing at the hospital. I should probably call her and check. I step out of the bathroom and pick up my phone from the nightstand. The time on it says it’s past 10:00 am. I slept in really late. I’m scrolling through my contact list when I realize I don’t have her number. I never collected it.

I turn off the phone and drop it on the bed. What am I doing? I shouldn’t be calling her. I just told her I couldn’t be with her last night after she fell down the stairs. I should’ve been there for her instead of pushing her away like that. No matter what I was feeling, breaking up with her so abruptly was not the right thing to do.

Fuck! I’m a horrible person.

I don’t know what to do anymore. She’s probably mad at me and doesn’t even want to see me. I can’t go to the wedding because she’s going to be there, but I’m already here, and Ryan and Joelle know I am too. It’d be insulting to not go to the wedding when they know I’m in my room.

I pick up my phone and dial up Benjie’s number. He’s always been good at these sorts of things. Socializing is his thing, not mine.

His number rings for a couple of seconds before he picks up the call.

“You’re calling twice in a week. That too just hours apart? I should be highly honored. You’ve never craved so much of my attention before.”

“Shut up.”

“That would be hard to do since we’re on the phone, and I need to talk so we can communicate.”

He can be such a goof sometimes.

“I need your help, Benjie.”

“Ah! And there lies the conundrum. I should’ve known you’d only call this much because you did something. Come on, tell Daddy. What did you do?”

“That’s gross, Benjie. You’re not my dad.”

He chuckles loudly; dare I say, he has got me in a better mood already. Ro is just like that. I sigh and run my hand through my hair.

“Alright, I’m serious now. What did you do?” he asks.
