Chapter Nine
Summer
The sound of my doorbell ringing, accompanied by the loud banging at my front door, causes me to block my ears as I hope for whoever it is to get the hint and stop bothering me.
Deep down, I have an inkling as to who it is, but I donât want Arden to have to see me in this pitiful state. I had planned to get myself together and resume life as though nothing happened.
After I refused to respond to his texts, Jax proceeded with bombarding my phone with calls and during the time he didnât, his friends, whom I once considered mine, took over. I couldnât take it anymore, and so I hurled my phone across the room, satisfied as it hit the wall and shattered on the ground into tiny fragments. I didnât even bother to pick the shards. I simply just laid back on my bed, and ever since yesterday, I havenât been able to bring myself to get up.
I breathe out a sigh of relief when the knocking stops. But I celebrated too soon because my ears perked up at the sound of my front door being unlocked. The realization that someone has access to my home causes a strange rush of alertness to course through my bones, causing me to swing my legs from the bed to go find out who it is.
I grab the umbrella Arden left here the day I arrived at Mulberry for extra caution, and I donât bother about the fact that Iâm dressed in my nightgown with my hair sticking out on all sides.
I step out of my room, moving stealthily to the living room, and when my eyes finally come in contact with that of the intruderâs, tears start to fall from my eyes as though planning for the moment I laid my eyes on Arden.
He immediately rises from the couch in my living room and rushes over to me, engulfing me in a hug I didnât even realize I needed desperately. I wrap my arms around him, sobbing and ruining his perfect suit with my unnecessary tears.
But oddly enough, I donât want to let go of him. I hold him tightly, his muscles tensing at the intimate gesture yet even while uncomfortable at our bodies pressed together, he still manages to soothe down my hair which looks as though itâs been struck by lightning.
âIâm sorry for disappointing you,â I sob into his shirt, the umbrella in my hands falling to the ground with a loud thud.
âItâs fine, Summer, you didnât disappoint me even for a moment,â he assures me, still firmly holding me in his arms that are now relaxed.
We stay like that for a moment before I finally run out of tears I lift my head from off his sturdy chest, revealing an embarrassing patch of tears on his fancy gray suit that matches the striking color of his eyes, which are now peering deep into my soul.
âI didnât mean to just disappear like that. I canââ Iâm cut short by the back of his palms that caress my cheeks, sending tingles down my spine.
