Chapter 11

Nita Candy, who had been 3B’s girlfriend since middle school, tried to catch 3B’s eye to see what he was thinking, but he never looked her way. He just stared out the window at the scenery floating by. She wanted to know why he hadn’t said word since they left the prison. He hadn’t even tried to fuck her. She would’ve at least thought he would be more interested in making love to her than sight-seeing. By the way he was distancing himself, she wondered if the person they were going to see was another woman. If it was, she hoped he made his peace with God, because she wouldn’t hesitate to kill him.

The Hummer’s privacy window slid down. The driver, Slip, said, “We’re here, 3B.”

“Thanks, man.” Trey Bryant opened the door. “Listen, Slip, get Nita to the party. I’ll meet yall there.”

“What—” Before Nita could get the rest of the words out of her mouth, Trey leaned over and kissed her.

When he pulled his lips from hers, she let out a breathless sigh. She sunk back in the leather seats, hungrily licking her lips. This was the only way she would remain calm. He didn’t need her insisting on going inside with him. She would’ve lost it once she saw he was here to see another woman. Then he’d be back in prison for putting his hands on her. Because there was no way she wouldn’t hesitate to slap him across the face once she saw Safiya Cody. Nita was that kind of female.

Trey hopped out of the Hummer and slammed the door closed before Nita had a chance to snap out of her blissful moment. Neatly straightening out his Hugo Boss sports jacket, he strolled into the White Water nursing home.

“Excuse me, miss. Could you tell me if Safiya Cody is here?” Trey asked as he walked up to the receptionist’s desk, lifting the Gucci sunglasses onto the top of his head.

The woman stared up at him. “Yes. I’ll page her. May I ask who you are?”

“A family friend. Trey Bryant.”

The receptionist picked up the receiver and called Safiya’s pager.

Trey flipped his sunglasses down over his eyes and turned away from the woman’s gaze. He could see she was trying to place his face. The last thing he wanted was the woman recognizing who he was. He didn’t want the nursing home to be swamped with paparazzi. The national media had no idea he was out of prison—yet. That was how he wanted to keep it. He needed to do this for Stanley. He didn’t want the world’s eyes on him while he carried out his promise.

He had his publicist and lawyer put out a false report of his release date. He knew they would be right on the parking lot when he walked out of prison. He wanted to keep a low profile until he was ready to let the world know he was free.

“Excuse me, Mr. Bryant, Safiya will be out in a minute. You can have a seat,” the receptionist said with her arm extending toward the sitting area.
