Chapter 9

Super Encryption

In previous chapters, I showed you a few ciphers, how they worked, and gave a hint about possible weakness. "Ok, we get it, but how do you make up for the weaknesses?" you may be asking. Well, it's rather simple: you implement a technique called super encryption to attempt to make up for shortcomings in a cipher.

What Is It?

Super encryption is simply the use of multiple ciphers, usually in multiple steps, as a singular encryption scheme. Say, for example, we had the Vigenere Cipher as our first step. You think, "Well, that's great." Yes, it is, but what if you added a columnar transposition to the Vigenere? This would make things more difficult to crack. Let's say, for example, that you had a custom straddling checkerboard, you used a pair of columnar transpositions, one simple and another disrupted. That is much more difficult than a Vigenere, by any measure, to crack. As a matter of fact, this very scheme was used by the Soviets to send messages to their operatives in the United States during the 1950's.

Should You Rely On This?

Well, this isn't an encryption cipher as it is combining ciphers into an algorithm, so, yes, you should rely on this, with a caveat: Test test test this to verify security.
