Chapter Seven

Tara

I don’t know what time it is, but I’m not ready for bed.

Leo carries the large mattress into the living room and places it on the floor in front of the fireplace. I fix up the sheets, wondering who this bed is for. Me? Him? Me and him?

I’m not sure, but one of those options is awfully intriguing.

I feel silly for not making the connection before, especially since it was pretty obvious now that I’m looking back on it. What was I thinking? He told me his mate’s name was Tara and I was like ‘Duh, that’s my name too!’

He must think I’m a total moron.

But come on. I had no idea that an amazing man like this could be into a girl like me. That doesn’t happen very often, so I can’t be too hard on myself for not even contemplating the fact that we could be made for one another.

I guess this proves that sometimes the universe will single you out, get your back, and move mountains for you. It will give you something so good that you wouldn’t have even dared to dream it up in the first place.

My neck begins tingling as I watch him fluff up the pillows and place them on the mattress. I brush my fingertips over the skin under my ear and the tingling gets stronger. The sensation is a demanding one. It’s like an itch I can’t scratch. Like the vibrating area is missing something.

“It’s going to get cold tonight,” Leo says as he tosses another log into the fire. I can’t help but gawk at his broad shoulders. They’re perfectly round. I’ll never be stuck behind a tall guy at a concert again. I can just hop onto these babies and I’ll have a front-row view no matter where we are. “But the fire should keep you warm.”

“You mean it should keep us warm, right?”

He looks at me with a hungry look in his eyes.

“I mean…” I quickly say with my heart pounding. “I don’t want you to have to sleep in a cold room all by yourself. That’s not really fair. I wasn’t implying that…”

The hunger in his eyes intensifies and it makes the words dry up in my throat. What was I implying? That we should sleep in the same bed?

My brain starts to do some mental gymnastics to justify why that’s the only suitable option.

“Well, we are mates,” I say with an innocent little shrug. “We can sleep in the same bed without doing anything, right?”

His lustful eyes roam up and down my body and I suddenly realize how stupid that suggestion is. The second we get into that bed, we’re going to be all over each other.

The thought of that sends my tingling neck into a frenzy. What the hell is that? Did I hurt it in the accident?

“We’ll sleep together,” he says with a finality in his tone. “I want to make sure you’re warm all night.”

I swallow hard as I look at him and nod.
