Melanie couldn’t fucking believe it.

Behind her, the setting sun chilled the air, sending a shiver down her body. While in front of her, the car’s engine steamed and sputtered along the edge of the same ditch she’d tumbled in weeks ago. Clearly, it haunted her.

It reminded her of two things at once. One, during her haste to leave the house that day, she’d forgotten her coat. Again. And two, her bad luck was holding strong.

Heaving a sigh, she dialed the number to Harry’s towing again. The line came back busy. The mocking beep, beep, beep grating her nerves to the point where she almost hurled her phone at the nearest tree. A scream clawed up her throat, and she swallowed it back.

Fuck, she needed to get out of this town.

Her cold fingers scrubbed her face. Her eyes drifted closed and struggled for calm.

A pair of headlights illuminated her engine again, and she spun around with a new surge of hope. Whoever it was, maybe they’d stop and give her a ride home. The possibility that she was about to be rescued shot her full of adrenaline.

Unless it was Hank from the diner, in which case she needed to dive into her car as quickly as possible and pretend to be on the phone with some imaginary boyfriend.

Oh shit, please don’t let it be Hank.

A hulking truck pulled off the road, slowing to a stop directly in front of her smoking car. Even before she noticed the shadowy silhouette of the driver, Melanie recognized the truck and knew instantly who sat in the cab. Her hands furled into fists at her side, and she retracted her previous plea to the universe.

She’d take Hank after all. Anyone but him.

Holden stepped down from the cab of the truck, and Melanie crossed her arms to stop herself from flipping off the sky.

Instead, she settled for mumbling, “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”
