Jesse wasn’t going to invite Leo, he wasn’t even going to go to Peter and Evan’s meal, but he knew Evan would nag him until he said yes, so he turned up at the appointed time with Norman and a six pack.

Peter opened the door with a harassed look in his eyes.

“Evan’s attempting to cook,” Jesse guessed as Peter ushered him in.

“Why does he do this?” Peter hissed.

“I thought you liked cooking sessions together?”

“Not when I’m trying to cook for company.”

“You’re not telling me you don’t have another chilli lurking somewhere?”

“Of course I do, but that’s not the point.”

“What are you cooking for Dan?” Jesse asked as he handed over the beer.

“Homemade nutroast.”

“Wow, have you made enough for the rest of us?”

“Of course.”

Peter always joked that he experimented more with his vegetarian cooking than his usual fare, and there was no doubt that the meat-eaters were as eager to try the veggie menu as the rest of the food.

“Peter? Where the hell are you? Is it meant to be this colour?” Evan’s worried cry came from the kitchen.

“Oh God!” Peter jogged down the hallway and vanished to retrieve his cooking from Evan’s unwelcome attention.

Jesse grinned. He was about to follow them when there was a knock at the door. He prayed that it was Lawrence and Will. No one could have been listening because Dan and Mickey stood at the door. There was an awkward silence, then Jesse stood back.

“There was a crisis in the kitchen,” he said.

Dan smiled at him. “Evan’s interfering?”

“You got it.” Jesse smiled at him and then at Mickey. “I’ve only just arrived.”

“Will and Lawrence will be here soon. We saw them parking around the corner.” Dan bent down to say hello to Norman. “They’ve brought Bob.”

Jesse frowned. “How do you know?”

“Lawrence was wrangling a small, brown and white wriggling thing into the back seat.”

“He’s going to be in a good mood.”

Dan snorted and then he furrowed his brow. “Where’s Leo?”

“He’s delayed. Trains at Victoria running twenty minutes late. He’ll be here in a minute.”

“Who’s Leo?” Mickey asked.

“Jesse’s friend. You remember I told you about the one who tried to turn Jesse’s carpet into grass.”

“Oh. Yeah.” Mickey didn’t sound impressed.

Neither had Jesse at the time but he didn’t like Mickey passing judgement on his friend. “He’s a good friend. Always there for me.” He saw Dan wince and got a momentary sense of shame mixed with satisfaction.

“He was my friend too,” Dan said. “It’ll be good to see him again.”

“And I invited him.” Evan arrived in the hallway, wiping his hand on a tea-towel.

Mickey slid his arm around Dan, staking his claim. Dan stiffened then he relaxed and Mickey pulled him harder. Jesse wanted to rip Mickey to pieces. Fortunately there was another knock and Dan opened the door to a blur of brown and white beagle. Norman started barking and then they both hared down the hallway to find Hazel.

“Christ, he’s a fucking menace,” Lawrence muttered.

“I thought you strapped him in when you were in the car.
