Chapter 8

Esther was used to working hard. She’d spent her entire life subjected to garden labor with Freya beside her, both of them sweating until the sun went down. But that hadn’t prepared her at all for a day like this.

Her back hurt worse than when she was bent over spending the day weeding in the garden. Her neck felt like she’d whipped it around too fast, and tiny tingles spread down her spine every time she looked to her right. Even her fingers hurt. How, she wasn’t sure, but the joints in them screamed every time she made a fist.

But she’d also never felt so fulfilled in her life.

Those goblins had really appreciated all the help she’d offered. Sure, the food wasn’t hers. But she had assisted in giving it out. She’d carried some of the food back to individual homes and put it all away because the goblins were too weak to do it on their own. Esther had even gotten a pot of soup going for one of the elderly goblins who had ears like a basset hound. The woman had pressed a single gold coin into her palm, saying they had no need for metal when food was about.

She would do this a thousand times over again in her life if Lux would let her. Esther’s heart exploded with the sensation of doing so much good in such a short amount of time.

This was what she’d been missing in her life. The chance to do something more than just work for herself. Freya was always so concerned with their own needs, that she’d never looked beyond. Never thought about the ways they could help other people.

Esther bit into the sandwich Lux had thrown together with a satisfied moan. “I had no idea food could be so good.”

“It’s a lot better when you’ve worked for it, that’s for sure.” He grinned, mouth full of chewed up bread with a small piece of lettuce hanging out of his mouth. “You did good today, Esther. Worked harder than a lot of mortals I’ve met before.”

“I’ve worked hard before,” she replied with a chuckle. “I just thought gardening or working in the woods would be harder than handing out food. I was wrong.”

“Surprising how it sneaks up on you, isn’t it?” He took another hefty bite of his sandwich and let out a little sound of happiness of his own. “You know, I thought when they told me that I had to take a goblin bride, that I would have to endure a ridiculous amount of boredom. Most mortal women expect a house and a safe place to rest their head at night. And yet, here you are after a hard day’s work and we’ll be sleeping under the stars. You haven’t complained a bit.”

She’d never been one for complaining, if she was being honest with herself. Complaining meant that she wouldn’t have enough time to get the job done, and once someone asked Esther to do something, she would complete it.
