Chapter 7 – Lauren

It had been three months and I was done filming Hell’s Kitchen. I was eliminated in the seventh episode, but the experience was crazy in a good way. Gordon was really nice, and I couldn’t thank Xavier enough for the experience. The show was set to air in a few months. Growing up, I should’ve been in the kitchen more with Camilla when she cooked. I’m sure, if I had, I would’ve made it further in the competition or even won that bitch! Honestly, I was surprised that I even made it that far, because I was up against some really good cooks. I’m proud of myself.

My cell phone ringing jolted me out of my thoughts as I picked up the phone call.

“Hey sissy,” Camilla sang into the phone.

“Hey sis,” I shot back with a smile.

“I miss you.”

“I miss you, too. How are you?” I asked.

“I’m doing okay. I’m officially six months,” She replied!

“I cannot wait to meet my nephew,” I sang! Camilla and Meshach were having a baby boy, and I know Meshach was over the moon to bring another son into this world.

“No name yet?” I asked.

“No not yet. We can’t seem to agree on one.” She answered.

“Y’all better think of something and quick!”

“I know. These next three months are going to fly by.”

“I can’t wait to meet him! You okay, though? You sound sad and you know we’re twins so I know something is off. Don’t lie to me.” There was a long pause before she responded.

“Well, it’s mom….. She has breast cancer.” The room felt like it was spinning as I thought about my mom having cancer. It suddenly felt like all the air was being sucked out of the room.

“Sis, are you there?” Camilla lowly asked.

“Ye—yeah, I’m here. When did she find out? How bad is it?” I was terrified to hear the answers to my questions but I had to know.

“She been knew. She kept it from us. I’m upset that she did, but she didn’t want to ruin my wedding and reception or stress me out being pregnant or have you worry since you’re all the way there in California. I understand her reasoning, but I hate that she’s had to go through this alone.”

I began to get teary-eyed. Having lost our dad and not being able to attempt to repair our relationship, I didn’t want to think about losing my mother. Especially, now that we were doing so well.

“It’s stage one. She has to have a lumpectomy.”

“Wow. Like, I don’t understand. Has she tried other options?” My heart was crushed.

“According to the doctors, there’s only one site of cancer in her breast and the tumor is under four centimeters. A lumpectomy is a less evasive surgery that can preserve much of the appearance and sensation of her breasts. The recovery time is much easier than having a mastectomy as well.”

“When is she having the surgery?” I whimpered.

“In two weeks.”

“I’m coming home. No ifs, ands, or buts,” I responded.

“Okay, sis. I hate this is happening to her,” Camilla sadly uttered.
