Chapter Eight

Mom wheeled me out of the emergency room. My jaw dropped when I saw all the cops standing there. Almost every agency in the Phoenix area was represented. They saluted me as I was wheeled by. Tears welled in my eyes. “All of this for me? And how did they even know what happened?”

“Somehow the media got a copy of the hospital’s security tape showing you taking down an armed felon with a bedpan and did a “breaking news” report on you,” Mom said proudly.

I shrugged. “It was all I had.”

“At least it wasn’t full of pee,” Julie said.

I grinned. “Color me happy.”

“And every one of the news stations let their viewers know the hospital was kicking the brave officer out,” Sergeant Bergman said as he helped me into the armored personnel carrier.

I took a seat on the bench. “It’s okay, it’s not like I’m seriously hurt.”

“It’s not okay. Your doctor was furious and got into a shouting match with the hospital’s administrator,” Julie replied.

Mom smiled gleefully. “Which also made the news. I think your weightlifter of a doctor is the one who gave the media the tape.”

“The sheriff was notified and he immediately sicced the county’s lawyers on the hospital’s administrator,” Sergeant Bergman added.

Frank shook his head. “Kicking an injured officer out of the hospital is just wrong.”

“The last time I had a problem at the hospital, a security guard named Hank was a big help. This time, not one guard showed up to assist me. I mean they had to have heard the gunshots,” I interjected.

Mom scowled. “They did. I found one of the cowards hiding in a linen closet.”

“Oh yeah, before I forget. Is that horny, old geezer being charged with anything?” Call me curious.

An evil smile curved Sergeant Bergman’s mouth. “Once the captain reviewed Julie’s body camera video, including the monkey incident, he decided to charge Sam Foster with lewd behavior, and interfering with a law enforcement officer’s duty.”

Frank leaned forward eagerly. “Was there really an orgy?”

“Yes but seeing naked old people getting it on isn’t sexy, it’s disturbing,” Julie said with a shudder.

“Depends on the old guy,” Mom muttered.

I rolled my eyes.

Julie looked horrified.

Thunk. Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.

“We’re taking fire,” the driver hollered.

Mom pulled out her handheld radio, “Strike Team Alpha the suspect has taken the bait. Release the drones.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

I bristled. “I’m bait?”

“No,” Julie interjected, “I am. You’re just along for the ride. Ichabod has a lot to answer for.”

That he did. I recognized my brother Nate’s voice and asked, “Are all of the boys following us?”

“Just Nate, Jacob and Devon.” Mom opened her laptop and started typing. “You can run, but you can’t hide you little bastard.”

“How many of your brothers are on the SWAT team?” Frank asked.

“Three, but I can outshoot all of them and Logan has been training me on disarming bombs.”

“Bombs?” Frank frowned. “Why haven’t you tried out for SWAT or the bomb squad?”

“Ichabod,” Julie spat.

“Partly,” I shot back. “Practicing our dance routines was very time-consuming.”
