THE ULTIMATE VALUE OF SRS AND MAS

To sum up, RCTs are never similar enough to be considered identical replicates, but they are repeated studies, usually on different populations under different conditions. Comparable RCTs examine one or similar outcomes (based on a hypothesized cause-and-effect relationship), which is why comparable RCTs can be included in SRs and MAs. One would hope that when SRs and MAs show convincing results further repeated RCTs would be avoided, saving valuable resources. However, evidence to date suggests that this rarely occurs.

Although there are good and bad reasons for repeating SRs and MAs, reproducibility is imbedded in the creation of reliable SRs and MAs. Data are extracted by two independent researchers, and the resulting analyses are compared. The best reasons for repeating SRs and MAs are that new evidence has become available; a new outcome has become of interest; or there is a need to correct bad methods.
