Chapter Thirteen

LAU’REN

“W

hy are you walking in here, glowing, all happy and stuff?" Milo asked as I entered the diner.

"Because of this. Bam!” I shouted as I pointed to the rock that was glistening on my finger.

“Ooooh, girl, let me see that bling,” the other server, Karen, asked. "Congrats, boo! You deserve a good man. Now let me get back to work,” she said after giving me a hug.

I smiled. I was indeed happy. Our weekend in Louisiana had started off rocky, then ended up magnificent. We had a wonderful time at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino. I went to the breakroom and grabbed my apron to begin my shift when I noticed I had my first customer for the night.

I walked over to the table. "Hi, welcome to Ms. Vickie’s Diner. I am Lau'ren, what can I start you off with to drink today?"

The customer didn’t respond. “OK, if you’re not ready, I can come back in a few minutes,” I said to the customer who had their head on the table.

She sat up and looked at me and rolled her eyes. "Where is the other server? I don’t want you at my table.”

I clenched my jaw and responded to this rude bitch. "Karen? Well, her shift is over for the night so I will be more than happy to serve you,” I replied, trying hard not to let Bonquisha, who lived inside of me, loose because this rude little bitch was really trying to take me there tonight.

"I apologize. I don’t mean to be rude; I just lost a family member who was real close to me."

I quickly emphasized with her. “I am so sorry for your loss, ma’am. Sometimes things happen beyond our control."

"It’s just so sad,” she sobbed. “She just had a baby, and now she’s gone!"

She pulled out her phone and began showing me her cousin’s Facebook page. She was a beautiful person. She went on, “My family has been trying to get in touch with her baby’s father, but he is not answering.”

“I am so sorry to hear that, sweetie,” I said as I touched her hand. “I cannot replace your cousin, but I will make you a nice cup of tea to give you some warmth inside. I’ll be back.” She nodded while continuing to sob.

When I returned with the tea, she thanked me. "I told Leetha that Lionel didn’t care about her or that baby. Lionel Hays doesn't care about anyone but himself and that new bitch he's shacking up with,” she laughed.

"Um. Excuse me?” I asked, shocked. “Did you just say, Lionel Hays? Well, I guess I’m the new bitch you are referring to, but we’re not shacking up, and I’m not a bitch to him because he wouldn’t have placed this on my finger!” I shouted, pointing to the bling that was weighing my finger down.

“And Lonnie doesn’t have any kids. I’ve been with him every day since we got together, and my man doesn’t keep secrets from me!" I screamed.
