Chapter Eleven

STILL LIGHTHEADED WITH disbelief, Jade hauled herself to her feet and leaned over Connie’s unresponsive form. She looked like she’d been through a zombie apocalypse. Her head and both hands were wrapped in bandages, a ventilator obscured the lower half of her face. She was hooked up to a number of machines and an IV steadily dripped above her. Jade’s fingers twitched, she ached to reach out to the young woman lying so still, save for the hissing, regular breaths that rose and fell under the blanket.

At the sound of the door opening, Jade whirled. A slim, bespectacled man in brightly patterned scrubs stood in the doorway. He came into the room and fixed her with a searching expression.

“Do you know her?” he asked, his voice soft and calm. Immediately, Jade relaxed a notch.

“Yeah, I do,” she said. She shifted her weight from one foot to the other, worried that he was going to ask her to leave. The opposite happened.

“That’s great,” he said. He reached out both hands and grabbed Jade’s. “All of us in nursing have been rooting for this young lady since they brought her in. I know this must be hard for you, but do you have time to fill out some forms?”

“Sure,” Jade said. The nurse, who introduced himself as Alan Walsh, rushed off and soon Jade was parked on a molded plastic chair in a tiny waiting room, in possession of an admissions form and a pen bearing the hospital’s logo, which she was told she could keep. After she filled in as much information as she knew, Jade handed the documents back. She couldn’t wait any longer. She had to know. “Okay, I did my bit,” she said. “Now it’s your turn. Tell me about Connie. What happened to her? When was she admitted? Is she going to be okay?”

Alan adjusted his glasses on his nose before he spoke. “Are you family?”

“No, I’m…” Jade trailed off. What the hell was she? Stalling for time, she took off her clip and shook back her hair. She came to a decision and said, “I’m a friend.”

With a hum of understanding, Alan gave her a long look before he sat down opposite Jade. He loosely clasped his hands in front of himself. “Ms. Mason was brought here by ambulance and admitted in critical condition early Friday morning. She lost vitals on the way in and was resuscitated. As of now, her condition is stable, but it’s still touch and go.”

Jade pressed a hand to her face as she pictured the scene. She cleared her throat. “What happened to her?”

Alan shook his head. “I can’t give you those details. I’m sorry.”

Jade let out a long breath. She was disappointed but not surprised. “Look, I’m not family, but is it okay if I visit?” She was not above using her P.I. status as leverage, but she couldn’t hide the fact that she was much more than just an investigator to Connie.

“Of course it is,” Alan said. “I’m really glad there’s someone here for her.
