if the computed value for T1 is smaller than E(T1) = n1(n1 + n2 + 1)/2, and
if the computed value for T1 is greater than E(T1) = n1(n1 + n2 + 1)/2.
Again, we reject the null hypothesis if the p-value is smaller than the significance level α. If the p-value is larger than α, we cannot reject the null hypothesis and so we accept it.
Example 9.4.1 Nowadays, university professors are evaluated on the basis of three criteria: teaching, research, and administration. For the evaluation of a professor’s research performance, the number of publications in internationally renowned scientific journals is important, as well as the number of times that his articles are referred to by other authors. The latter figure is the number of citations.
For a fair comparison of the number of citations of a professor in marketing and a professor in statistics, it is useful to compare how often scientific articles in the field of marketing are cited with how often scientific articles in the field of statistics are cited. The following table shows the numbers of citations for 12 marketing articles and 14 statistics articles:
Marketing 2, 3, 6, 6, 6, 9, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 72
