CHAPTER

XXIII

The turn onto Vachell Lane turned out to be more of a hairpin rather than a mere hard right, so Mason took advantage of the distance they had put between them and the swarm to jump out, unpin the trailer, and rid the Kenworth of all of that extra weight. Even with his insistence that nothing in the trailer was likely to be of use, there were some protestations about what they might or might not be giving up, so before abandoning the trailer completely, he let the whole group sate their curiosity while he siphoned several gallons of diesel fuel from the Kenworth into Gloria’s empty belly. Addison snapped the container’s lock, Richie and Christopher swung the doors wide open, and eleven people stood around in a cluster, gazing up at stacks upon stacks of hi-def, big screen TVs.

“The container came from China,” Mason told them matter-of-factly. “What did you think was going to be in there? Spam?”

“It could have been baiju,” Addison offered. “It’s an alcoholic beverage. It looks kind of like scotch, but they make it from fermented sorghum instead of barley.”

“Yeah? Lot of call for sorghum-based drinks in Texas, is there?”

“Well, they make a pretty good beer too,” Addison stumbled on. “China, I mean, not sorghum. I don’t think you can even make beer from sorghum. Anyway, for the record it’s called Tsing Tao, and there’s no sorghum in it at all. It’s just regular beer made the… uh, usual… uh…” He let his words peter out, but to save face, he had to tack on one last, “Well, it could’ve been beer.”

They left the dead weight to rot away and split into their familiar groups as they headed back to the vehicles. Mason escorted Alejandra to her new ride, taking great care to stay well out of arm’s reach.

“Ally, I’m sorry about your car, but it couldn’t be helped.”

“I loved that car, Mace,” she growled back, her dark eyes threatening all manner of injury.

Mason took a cautious step back.

“Ally, a Mustang is wholly impractical. Your mijito guzzled gas, it roared like a son of a bitch, and it was so low to the ground that it was only a matter of time before it got hung up on a curb.”

Alejandra took two steps closer to Mason and pinned him to the spot with a snarl.

“I would not let it get hung up on a curb. In fact, I took special care while driving to specifically not get it hung up on a curb.”

Mason backed up until he came upon the cold, hard metal of the Kenworth.

“Ally, this truck is an upgrade. Okay, it’s not as pretty as the Mustang, but boy, you should feel the power! I’m telling you… you spend some time behind the wheel of this bad boy, and you’ll soon forget old whatsisname.”

She took one step closer and stretched high up on her toes to come as close to nose-to nose with the man as physics allowed.

“His name was Antonio.”

“Really? Antonio?”

“Something wrong with Antonio?” she snarled.
