The Ideal Candidate
One time, Plankton came into town to try to steal the Krabby Patty formula. Sinister Squid, Ugly Urchin, Bad Blowfish, and Ghastly Grouper were just several of the creepy guys who came to town with Plankton. These tough guys were so bad even the cops fled town. Not only did they try to steal the formula, they also car-jacked an ice cream truck and even ran away after ringing a doorbell. To top it off, they even began to “pop bubble wrap in the library!” Horror of horrors!!!25 And, although his job description only included flipping patties, SpongeBob went far above and beyond his minimum-wage duties to save Bikini Bottom from the low-life scum that began to infest town. Using a huge jelly-fishing net, SpongeBob put a stop to the crimes of the bad guys and saved the day. Everyone returned to town once SpongeBob had restored order.
Aristotle believed that, although it was imperfect, representative democracy had the potential to allow a variety of interests to coexist within the same society. He called this type of system a “polity” to distinguish it from the downsides of democracy. In a democracy, the majority of people rule with the goal of seeking their own interests. In a polity, “the citizens at large administer the state for the common interest” (Politics, Book III). SpongeBob would therefore be an ideal candidate in a potential Bikini Bottom representative democracy because he displayed his capacity to look out for the interests of everyone even when it didn’t serve his own immediate interests.
Although he never receives more compensation than the gratitude of the other citizens along with his minimum-wage salary, SpongeBob willingly works hard to make Bikini Bottom the best place on Earth. If you ever have the chance to be a “Guardian,” or to choose the Guardian of your society, I hope you’ll be as wise as my favorite sponge.
