Jade and Sarah stared at the ceiling as they laid in her hotel bed. The two of them had shared two bottles of red wine. They had talked for close to three hours about work and their philosophies on life. Jade mostly listened to Sarah and was intrigued by her. He liked the way her mouth moved, and the way she smiled.

“What do you believe in?” Jade asked.

“What?” Sarah replied as she laughed. The question caught her off guard. “I guess, I believe in the tooth fairy and Santa Claus...” Sarah joked.

“I’m serious. Do you believe in God?” Jade asked as he leaned over her.

“God hasn’t done too much for me…” Sarah stopped laughing and became reflective. “I don’t believe in much of anything.” She said.

Jade smiled and laid back down. Sarah grabbed his hand and looked at his ring.

“So what is this?”

Jade sat back up again and leaned in closer to Sarah. He removed the ring and turned it in his fingers.

“This ring represents attaining the highest level of membership in the Order.” Jade replied.

Sarah was interested. Andrew had a similar ring, but it was not as nice as Jade’s.

“So what did you have to do to get that ring?” Sarah said, using the conversation as an opportunity to be more flirtatious.

“This ring represents the level of knowledge and awareness I have…” Jade replied.

“Your knowledge and awareness of what?” Sarah prodded.

Jade looked at her and smiled.

“My knowledge of everything…”

She was curious, and curiosity was all he needed.

“Sarah, this ring represents a world you have yet to experience. The person wearing this ring could open more doors for you and can show you more than you can ever imagine. We are the Grand Master Architects. Should you ever meet someone wearing this ring, you should listen to whatever it is he has to say. If you do not believe in anything, Sarah, believe in us.”

Sarah’s heart was pounding as she looked in his eyes. She had always wanted those connections—these friends in high places. She did not know much about Jade’s background, but to her it did not matter. She knew he had connections, and he had clout.

Jade knew that the seed had been planted with Sarah. He could tell that she liked him for all of the wrong reasons. Their entire interaction was based on physical attraction and everything that the eyes could easily gather. He learned more about her than she knew about him. Jade believed that she may have even thought he was a good guy.

Jade leaned in to kiss her. Their lips almost touched when she pulled away. Jade gently grabbed the back of her neck, and Sarah put up a playful resistance. Jade could feel that Sarah was not completely there with him. At this point, Jade had been acquiring souls easier than he had expected. After Max, he met people who all but handed their souls to him. They were easily influenced and nudging them in the direction he wanted them to go was all it took.
