Chapter 40

Snapping out of her trance, Del saw the day had grown late. The groups of musicians had changed; some were gone completely. The painters were packing up. The shadows had grown long.

How long had she been sitting here? Her mind told her she’d just sat down. However, her body ached in response as she stood up. A stiffness was in her joints, and one leg was asleep. Stinging nettles of pain ran up her leg when she shifted her weight. It made her limp awkwardly. She felt old and tired.

Maybe I do look old, she thought. A nap sounded good right now.

She limped through the thinning crowds, wiggling her foot and inspecting the paintings. The people were generally busy gathering their items, but some looked up when she approached, hoping to land a final sale. Their expressions were all the same. Each one, upon seeing Del, had a flash of surprise run across their face, their eyes widened, then they turned away.

Every response was the same.

What’s wrong with these people?

It was as if a black aura suddenly hung around her that everyone could see but her. She wished she’d worn her old jean jacket suddenly. There was comfort in being covered with layers.

She left the square and quickened her pace. The sun was sinking, and Frank may be at Armand’s house already. He’d want to hear what she had discovered about the telephone.

She soon forgot about the staring people from the park, but they would remember her. From time to time—even late into their own lives—they’d shake their heads and think back to this day. “That poor girl,” they’d say, “I wonder what was wrong with her?”
