Chapter

Thirty-One

I can hear Poppy and Daphne’s surprised exclamations, but I can’t see what’s got them gasping.

My heart leaps. What is it? What’s he been doing? I peer over Daphne’s shoulder, trying to see. She moves forward, and the room becomes visible.

There’s a huge white screen set up on the far wall. A projector is sitting at the other end of the room, and Mr. Fookes is fiddling with the buttons on it as if he’s trying to get it to work. The delicious smell of popcorn is wafting around the room.

The couches have all been moved to face the screen, and the lights in the room are dimmed like it’s a movie theater. A head pops out of the kitchen, and I recognize Zane. A shiver goes down my body. He’s here to take us to the compound tomorrow. It’s all starting to feel too real. I give Zane a solemn wave, and he gives a tiny nod, never one to get too effusive.

Freddie and his sister are sitting together talking quietly. Freddie doesn’t look one hundred percent, but he looks way better than he did earlier. I let out a small, relieved breath. He looks up and smiles, his full-force charming smile. I smile back, glad he’s awake and functioning.

“What’s happening?” asks Daphne, looking around the strange set up.

“We’re going to have a little slide show. I think it would help to have as many of us see this as possible. Get everyone’s thoughts.”

“What are we watching?” asks Poppy, peering closer at the projector. Her face is puzzled, like she’s trying to work it out without being told. “Where’s the reel?”

“I’ve changed this around some. And it’s not your usual kind of projector,” says Mr. Fookes mysteriously. “Come on everyone, sit down. We made popcorn.”

Zane goes back into the kitchen and then comes back out with bowls of popcorn, giving each of us our own supply. Rather than just normal buttery popcorn, this stuff has herbs and spices as well, and it smells absolutely delicious. My mouth starts watering, and I realize I’m really hungry.

Daphne takes a chair, and Poppy and I slouch into one of the couches. Zane takes the other sofa, putting his legs up and relaxing. Mr. Fookes stays by the projector, on a chair from the dining table. His hand is resting on the projector.

“So what are we watching?” I ask, before putting a handful of popcorn in my mouth. It tastes even better than it smelled.

“It might be something you’ve already seen,” says Mr. Fookes. “But it should be new to everyone else.”

I scrunch up my face in confusion. That’s very specific. What movie have I definitely seen, but no one else has? I could count on one hand the number of movies I’ve seen in the last few months since meeting Blade, but I used to watch hundreds of them, all recommended by Walter and Beanie from the pawn shop. Could it be some kind of home movie? That doesn’t seem right either. I can’t even begin to work out what he’s hinting at.
