3. Feminist theory should not, she argues, depict culture as that which overcomes nature, since nature and culture are not different in kind. In her view, “language, culture, intelligence, reason, imagination, memory,” as well as the “natural,” are “all equally effects of the same rigorous criteria of natural selection.”100 She says that each must provide “some kind of advantage to survival, some strategic value to those with access to them.”101 It is not clear if this admitted vitalism—that is, the force that produces life—is so easily amenable to sign systems, reason, and culture, the latter of which can be found in Richard Dawkins’ rather reductive account of memes. But in any case, she is evincing a certain Spinozism: each thing—even language and intelligence—seeks its own perseverance, which is nothing other than its power to survive.
