ST. AUGUSTINE’S CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL

St. Augustine’s Catholic Church was officially established on June 11, 1896, and the first chapel on the corner of Grand Avenue and Third Street North was dedicated on August 30, 1896. Extensive renovations were made to the church by 1916 to accommodate the growing congregation. Then on March 31, 1923, the church was completely consumed by fire. There was time to save most of the vestments and treasures of the parish, but an inadequate water supply via the hydrants meant that the firemen battled the flames for several hours without success. By Christmas Day 1924, Mass was held in a new facility that the church had built on its current site at 408 Third Street North. St. Augustine’s parochial school for grades one through eight opened on the new campus in the fall term of 1925, and continued to serve generations of local Catholic families until the school was closed in June 1977.
