MORE THAN ENOUGH

Honey hazel eyes trapped mine and threw away the key to any thought that wasn’t of her.

I wished I could bury it in the fucking dirt forever.

“Well,” Brielle said, dragging out the word. “I think that’s my cue to leave.”

Even her voice couldn’t break our stare.

Brielle kissed Arabella’s cheek and said goodbye, leaving us alone in The Knolls’s backyard.

She forced herself to look away first.

I took the seat Brielle left empty, unable to stop obsessing over the girl I hadn’t seen in weeks.

The weather reflected the best late April could offer. Arabella took full advantage of it with her bikini and cover-up.

Her glistening legs stole my attention and prompted a low whistle that reddened her brown skin.

The sight widened my smile.

It was crazy that a girl this beautiful was walking around with my last name.

“I missed the fuck out of that face,” I muttered, eyes tracing every inch.

“Kain.”

She said my name in such a bashful tone I had to chuckle.

We talked once a week. Don’t know when or how we set that boundary, but we did since she came here.

I grabbed a curl off her shoulder and twirled it around my finger.

Curls I loved replaced the straightened strands I’d grown used to seeing.

“Haven’t seen this in a while.”

My grin stretched from ear to ear when I let the curl go, only for it to bounce back into place—my favorite part.

“Stop acting like you ain’t know I was coming,” I chastised playfully.

I wanted her to want me here. I didn’t want to just pop up on her. Her doing whatever was right for her and her recovery was important to me. She jumped at the idea of me visiting, so I jumped with her.

My finger trailed from her hair down her arm out of pure selfishness because her skin trembled under the touch like I wanted.

“Kain.”

“Stop saying my name like that.”

I gave her thigh a soft smack before leaning back in my chair.

“I missed you,” she whispered.

“We speak every week, Bel.”

Her lips pursed.

“You know what I mean.”

I did.

Being here with her had my heart bursting at the seams. I couldn’t get that over the phone.

We stared at each other again, smiling like two giddy teenagers finally alone.

I tore my eyes from her to give The Knolls a good look.

“Julian sure knows how to pick ‘em.”

This was right up his J. Crew wearing ass alley. The pool was the entire length of the mansion this place was.

I laughed with her because the sound was too contagious not to. She took another look at me and sighed, picking up a sketchbook.

“Happy you’re doing that again.”

She glanced at me and then down at her sketchbook.

“This?”

I nodded. I couldn’t remember the last time I saw her sketch or paint.

“They have art therapy here.” She shrugged.

“That’s cool as fuck.”

She gave a small smile and returned to her sketch.

I observed her doing what she loved. This was the quietest she’d ever been in all the time I’d known her.

I didn’t expect her to be all over me, but I didn’t expect her to be so closed off either.
