Chapter 33

From his perch on the rafter, Tom could clearly make out the meeting room in the precise center of the building. The walls had no windows. Neither did the single corridor which led from the front entrance. The rear door led into the outer box, with two small offices and a kitchen dining area along the rear wall. The remaining U-shaped warehouse contained the explosives cache, neatly arrayed on shelves. The warehouse was far from full but contained dozens of small devices on the shelves surrounding the embedded conference room.

Interesting placement, Tom thought. Reminds me of a demolition site.

Tom turned his attention to the discussion below.

“So, we’ve got the lieutenant governor, the leaders of upper house, and three of the five mayors on our side. Did you lock down the heads of the agriculture and environmental protection groups, Les?” The man who spoke from the head of the table was a well-known developer on Oʻahu. Creighton Blythe ran flamboyant ads on TV all the time but had no criminal record. Tom had checked.

“Yep. They’re solid. How about the police, Red?” Les was a tall, bulky Caucasian. Probably played football in college.

Tom fished his smartphone from his pocket and used its camera to capture the features of each person at the table. Slipping his phone back in the pocket without losing his balance was a challenge. Tom somehow succeeded and returned his attention to the conversation below.

“No luck on Maui. They’ve been extra careful since Walden. But we’ve got Captain Grimm in Honolulu and Lieutenant Frawley on the Big Island. Only managed a couple of sergeants on Lanai, but they should be enough.” Red must have been a nickname from youth as the frail man’s hair was completely white.

“They better be. The grumbling will be historic when we open fifty thousand acres to new development,” Blythe snapped. “How about the justification?”

“The seven acts of terrorism to be carried out this week will destroy the reputations of the Hawaiian Homelands Protection Society and the various Sovereignty groups completely.” This voice had a Slavic accent. “Our teams will head to the other two warehouses to collect their explosive devices when we adjourn.”

What the hell? The explosives are here.

The Big Shits don’t know.

If the code is changed, they’d trip the explosives if they tried to leave. Even if they didn’t, when his team broke in . . .

Tom moved his arm back toward his pocket but remembered he had no signal once he entered the structure. Besides a stray signal might—

Tom surveyed the steel framework and spotted packages at each of the major junctions—Dave Walden’s detonators. Following the wiring, Tom noticed a large circuit box where everything converged.

Tom walked the maze of girders to the box, having to balance on one leg three terrifying times.

The arming code had been entered but not yet triggered.

Did I interrupt someone?

Tom studied the tangled wiring. He had to make sure the explosives couldn’t be brought online.

He followed a suspicious green wire to a digital display flashing three-zero-zero about ten feet away.
