Chapter 10

Phillip Tomlinson

Mercy

Phillip drove down the beltline listening to K97.5. He rocked his head as he listened to the R&B tunes. On his way home, he stopped by the auto parts store and bought wax for his truck. The shine had started to dull.

He turned up the volume on the radio and sang along with R. Kelly. “When a woman’s fed up . . .” He tapped his hand on the steering wheel and continued to rock his head to the beat.

His cell phone rang. Without looking, he reached over, retrieved and answered it.

“Hello?”

“Hello again, Phillip.”

Phillip didn’t recognize the voice. “Who is this?”

“It’s Jeana.”

“Jeana, how in the hell did you get my number? Didn’t I tell you a couple of weeks ago, to leave me and my family alone?” Phillip clinched his teeth and tightened his hands on the steering wheel. “I’m sick of this harassment. You’ll be hearing from my lawyer soon!”

“Don’t be so mean, Phillip. I was just calling you as a favor,” Jeana said.

“A favor. Don’t call me. I don’t know how you got this number, but you need to lose it. Don’t call me anymore.”

“Okay Phillip. I am going to ignore your last remarks and be nice. I think you need to check on your wife.”

“My wife? Jeana, I swear I am going to . . .”

“Save it, Phillip. You need to check on your little wifey. When I left your house about thirty minutes ago, she wasn’t doing very well.”

Phillip couldn’t have heard her right. “My house? What were you doing at my house?”

“Well, you wouldn’t talk to me. I gave you more than enough time. I had to talk to your wife. It’s your fault. If you had just treated me with some decency, then Taren and I wouldn’t have had to go over there.”

“You took him to my house?” Phillip asked. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“I just told you that, Phillip. Aren’t you listening? You and your wife are just the same. I tell her things and she asks me the same questions over and over.”

“What did you tell my wife?”

“Oh nothing she didn’t already know. She tried to play dumb, but I saw right through it. I have to give your wife a standing ovation; she acted like she didn’t know anything about Taren and the child support. I told her I didn’t appreciate the way you treated me in court and the other day when I visited your office.”

“You told my wife about our going to court and about the child support?” Phillip asked in disbelief.

“And, you should have seen her face when she saw Taren. I’ll just bet she’s been wondering what he looks like. Now she knows,” Jeana said.

“Jeana, tell me you are lying. Tell me you didn’t go to my house and talk to my wife,” Phillip said, hoping it wasn’t true.

“Yeah. I went. You thought I was bluffing? I wasn’t! I told you Taren was going to get all of his birthday presents and I meant it!” Jeana screamed.
