Chapter 10
Phillip Tomlinson
Mercy
Phillip drove down the beltline listening to K97.5. He rocked his head as he listened to the R&B tunes. On his way home, he stopped by the auto parts store and bought wax for his truck. The shine had started to dull.
He turned up the volume on the radio and sang along with R. Kelly. âWhen a womanâs fed up . . .â He tapped his hand on the steering wheel and continued to rock his head to the beat.
His cell phone rang. Without looking, he reached over, retrieved and answered it.
âHello?â
âHello again, Phillip.â
Phillip didnât recognize the voice. âWho is this?â
âItâs Jeana.â
âJeana, how in the hell did you get my number? Didnât I tell you a couple of weeks ago, to leave me and my family alone?â Phillip clinched his teeth and tightened his hands on the steering wheel. âIâm sick of this harassment. Youâll be hearing from my lawyer soon!â
âDonât be so mean, Phillip. I was just calling you as a favor,â Jeana said.
âA favor. Donât call me. I donât know how you got this number, but you need to lose it. Donât call me anymore.â
âOkay Phillip. I am going to ignore your last remarks and be nice. I think you need to check on your wife.â
âMy wife? Jeana, I swear I am going to . . .â
âSave it, Phillip. You need to check on your little wifey. When I left your house about thirty minutes ago, she wasnât doing very well.â
Phillip couldnât have heard her right. âMy house? What were you doing at my house?â
âWell, you wouldnât talk to me. I gave you more than enough time. I had to talk to your wife. Itâs your fault. If you had just treated me with some decency, then Taren and I wouldnât have had to go over there.â
âYou took him to my house?â Phillip asked. He couldnât believe what he was hearing.
âI just told you that, Phillip. Arenât you listening? You and your wife are just the same. I tell her things and she asks me the same questions over and over.â
âWhat did you tell my wife?â
âOh nothing she didnât already know. She tried to play dumb, but I saw right through it. I have to give your wife a standing ovation; she acted like she didnât know anything about Taren and the child support. I told her I didnât appreciate the way you treated me in court and the other day when I visited your office.â
âYou told my wife about our going to court and about the child support?â Phillip asked in disbelief.
âAnd, you should have seen her face when she saw Taren. Iâll just bet sheâs been wondering what he looks like. Now she knows,â Jeana said.
âJeana, tell me you are lying. Tell me you didnât go to my house and talk to my wife,â Phillip said, hoping it wasnât true.
âYeah. I went. You thought I was bluffing? I wasnât! I told you Taren was going to get all of his birthday presents and I meant it!â Jeana screamed.
