The rain had stopped leaving the heavy scent of damp grass and mud as Dai walked to his car.

Of course he’d lied. Once, briefly, he’d thought of taking his relationship with Ava to another level. He’d missed her terribly when she’d gone off to college and when he’d seen her again after months apart, he couldn’t believe how happy he’d been.

But then he was reintroduced to her world and realized how much he didn’t fit into it.

“I can’t believe she’s still friends with him.” The overheard comment still echoed because it revealed so much. First, that they were just friends, and second, anything more was out of the question.

He realized that her family wouldn’t want her with someone like him. That he rarely got on with her other friends even though by twenty years old he’d already made a million from his various ideas and was on the path to make much more. Ava wanted someone who was a good conversationalist (to fit into her social circle) had a degree and could please her parents. He couldn’t.

So he pushed that foolish thought away and sought to prove to himself that he was worth more, without realizing it. He met an attractive Chinese Jamaican lawyer, five years his senior, who liked his rough edges and gave him the confidence boost he needed; that he could be with someone with an advanced degree.

But soon, after a whirlwind romance and getting married, she realized Dai wasn’t the man for her. While he considered himself a homebody, she thought he was boring.

He wasn’t as mysterious and sexy as she’d first thought. Her dinner parties bored him, they didn’t like the same movies. He needed action, she loved subtitles and talky independent movies and then there was Donovan.

Their son had been a difficult baby and even harder to handle as a toddler. The tensions started there and an already fragile relationship fell apart. Dai gained custody and she met someone else.

His relationship with Ava was perfect as it was. He wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize that. Would he?

He remembered the night he kissed the back of her hand, how precious she’d been to him at that moment. He would have done anything to make her stop crying.

He hated her thinking she’d done anything wrong. That there was something wrong with her, when she was perfect. Perfect for the right man.

But he hadn’t been thinking about that when he’d nearly crossed the line when she’d come to help him clear out Elena’s things.

He’d only meant to make her stop laughing. He’d tackled her before. It had never been a big deal. But this time he almost kissed her.

His best friend.

Who still wanted to win back her ex.
