Nico’s childhood room was a time capsule.

Twin bed with an LA Lakers blanket folded on top of a gray comforter. A dusty lamp on the locker-style bedside table. Awards and trophies on the desk, for everything from wrestling to pistol shooting. There was even a trophy that appeared to be for bodybuilding. But in the tight confines of his dimly lit room, I didn’t want to think about his body, so I didn’t investigate that any further.

Instead, I investigated the band posters on the wall while he dug through his dresser for dry clothes.

“Here,” he said, handing me a T-shirt and a pair of cutoff sweatpants.

I took the stack from him, and we both stood there, watching each other.

“So?” I asked, breaking the silence.

“So what?”

I tilted my head toward the door. “You going to let me get changed?”

He grinned and then turned around. “I won’t peek.”

I scowled at his back. “Seriously? Go back to the party.”

“No way, not without you.”

“Why not?”

He twisted halfway around. “Because my mom likes you.”

The AC was blowing, and I was getting cold in my soaked dress. I pulled the towel tighter around me. “And?”

“And she’s going to ask me questions that I am not sure you are ready to answer.”

I lifted my hand and whirled my finger at him, the universal sign for “turn around.” He flashed a devilish smile and winked before doing so.

“And don’t you dare turn around until I say you can,” I added. His back quaked with laughter. I began to strip out of my wet clothes. “What questions?”

He turned his head. I clutched the dry T-shirt to my exposed breasts, and I barked “Stop” at him.

“Sorry,” he said, facing forward again. “Just not used to talking to someone like this.”

“You’re just being a perv,” I shot back.

“I promise I was not,” he said.

I dropped the dry shirt back on the bed and finished peeling off my wet dress, then my underwear. “You didn’t tell me. What questions?”

“She will ask what my intentions are.”

“And what are they?” I asked.

I tugged the T-shirt over my head. It had the letters “LAPD” emblazoned across the front and was large enough that it hit the top of my thighs, covering my ass.

“You are two feet away from me, and I hear the sounds of wet clothes peeling away from skin. You are likely naked in my childhood bedroom. You were right. My intentions right now are pretty pervy.”

“Nico, this is not going to—”

He turned around and caught me off guard. What I was going to say was This is not going to work. But his expression was at once tender and feral. It made his face soft but his eyes hard with desire. My chest heaved, and I forgot myself. Forgot to protest. Forgot that I was standing in his childhood bedroom wearing only a T-shirt. In fact, my lack of underwear was a boon at the moment.

The air between us was electric. Nico closed the distance and swept me into his arms. I pressed myself against his hard chest.
