“SLOW DOWN!” DAIRE’S scream startled me and I slammed on the brakes. The SUV careened to the shoulder of the road as Daire’s fingers clamped onto my arm in a death grip.

I was going to scold her for the dangerous move, but when I caught sight of her, the words died on my lips. She was pale to the point of looking unwell. She was sweating and shaky. Her eyes were twice their normal size, and her breathing was slow and shallow. She looked like she was in the middle of a panic attack.

“It’s okay. We’re fine, Daire.”

The roads were way better on the return trip back to Denver. We were near the spot we had originally stopped in Kansas when an accident occurred on the opposite side of the interstate. It looked like a minivan tried to pass a semi-truck but miscalculated how much clearance they needed. Both vehicles ran off the road and caused a few of the cars behind them to smash into one another. The minivan didn’t look so good, but the rest of the damage seemed minor. Several people were walking along the median between the two directions of traffic, and as soon as Daire saw them and heard the sirens from the first responders, she started to freak out.

She put her hands over her face and continued to shake violently. She looked like a shell of the vibrant, lively girl who rang in the New Year with my family. She looked frail and fragile, and nothing like the girl who’d slept next to me and tempted me to no end the last couple of nights. She had naughty hands and a wicked mouth when she wanted to.

“Someone is hurt. Do you think they’re going to be all right?” Her voice quivered, and it sounded like she was choking back tears.

It dawned on me that seeing the accident was a huge trigger for her. Even involving strangers she would never see again; it obviously still took her back to the night she nearly lost her brother. She hid her trauma well under her flirty and flippant attitude. I didn’t know how deep her issues ran and how tormented she was until I witnessed her total breakdown.

She was far from a pretty, perfect princess at the moment. She was almost unrecognizable.

“The motel we stayed at on our way to Nowhere is off the next exit. Can you hold it together for a little while longer?” I was worried she might pass out because her breathing was so shallow.

“So much blood. There was so much blood.” Her voice cracked, and she started to silently sob.

I reached out and caught her hand. It was ice cold. I squeezed her fingers and pulled the SUV back onto the road. It took longer to get to the exit than anticipated because traffic was backed up. When I parked, booked us a room, and carried her inside, she was practically catatonic. She was muttering nonsense, shaking uncontrollably, and her eyes were unfocused and wild.
