The ride to the lake with Jo was filled with pained glances and uncomfortable silences only broken by forced small talk such as the weather and business. She had every right to be upset. Truth be told, I was so nervous that my chest weighed heavy as if Clover were sitting on it. Each attempt to fill my lungs was met with extreme resistance.

This was beyond painful and not at all what I had in mind when I finally laid eyes on her again a few weeks ago. I meant to have a quick visit, a fix for a longing to see her beautiful face once more. Her face got me through those long nights on the trail and would have to get me through many more as I traveled to my date with fate. I never planned on speaking to her, only to watch from afar in order to protect her from the burden that was Sarah Sawyer.

How was I to know she'd been hoping for my return, wishing every new face in town would be mine? She must've been a glutton for punishment if she was praying to reconnect with this lost soul. How could she ever think that having feelings for someone like me would end well for her? The one comfort I had was knowing I'd given her fair warning and offered her an out.

She knew what would happen, but it didn't deter her actions. Maybe she thought she could change me or I'd decide to stay. Maybe she just couldn't resist a hard luck case. Either way it was bound to be hard on her, yet she held the line and made her intentions be known.

In all honesty, she still changed me despite my resistance. If things were different, I would stay here with Jo. But... seemed there was always a "but" or an "I wish”…but, things were not different. They were still the same as when I rode into town each of the times we'd met. The only difference was now my journey neared its end. Well, I hoped so anyway, because I finally had a reason to care how my story ended.

They said hope and faith were the big difference makers. Whether or not it evened the odds of thirty plus men against four was a mystery to me, but I was gonna hope it did and have faith I'd find my way back to Jo.

She rode beside me, all lost in worrisome thoughts. I tipped my hat back, tilted my head to catch her eyes and offered her a warm, confident smile. My heart pounded and the corners of my mouth stretched up to the brim of my Stetson when she returned the small gesture. When Jo smiled, time stopped and everything around me illuminated. A warmth that always defied explanation spread through me and multiplied tenfold when her smile was directed solely at me.

As I lit up, she did as well. Within seconds the tension lifted and we were left grinning like fools, unable to peel our eyes from one another.
