Sixteen

Bell

Over the next several weeks, something I’d thought impossible happened.

Hunter and I settled into something like a life.

I’d stopped resisting his lessons and had, much to my surprise—and his smug satisfaction—gotten pretty good with a gun.

They still weren’t a favorite of mine, but I’d gotten comfortable enough and didn’t fall to pieces at the very sight of one.

He’d also gotten me used to knives, and I was angling to get lessons with the bow and arrow, though, so far, he’d resisted.

I’d also learned how to collect and dry wood and how to dispose of refuse in a way that lowered the risk of detection. It was like living a homesteader’s dream, save the whole zombie thing.

And even that had been pushed to the periphery.

Hunter was hypervigilant, and I tried to mirror that. But as the weeks passed and the weather got colder, we saw fewer of those things and hadn’t seen one in two weeks.

But there was one problem, one that had started small, but as the days, or, more accurately, nights passed, got harder and harder to ignore.

“Jesus, Bell,” Hunter grunted from his place on the futon, “I can hear your teeth chattering from here.”

He sounded annoyed, and I couldn’t help but smile. In many ways, Hunter was an enigma to me, but one thing I knew for sure was how much he hated to miss his sleep.

“Sorry that my discomfort is keeping you awake,” I said, trying my best to sound serious, though I couldn’t help the little giggle that slipped out.

He didn’t say anything, but I listened as he stood and approached. Before I could blink, I felt strong hands grip my face and then my hands.

“Your fingers are ice-cold,” he said.

Though it was dark, I could easily picture the way his expression turned down.

“Yes. Because I’m cold,” I said.

“Why didn’t you say anything?” he grunted.

I’d gotten used to whispering, and listening closely, but in this moment, I was more focused on the sudden embarrassment that came over me.

Why hadn’t I said anything?

I didn’t know how to answer that.

Didn’t want to admit it, anyway.

But I knew the truth.

I’d been nothing but a burden to Hunter, had taken his resources without giving anything back. Somehow, asking for an extra blanket was a bridge too far.

When I didn’t answer, he grunted, and I felt his heat leave me. In an instant, he returned.

“Take this,” he said as he spread a blanket over the bed.

“Hunter, I’m not taking your blanket.”

“It’s fine,” he said, his voice tight.

“No, it’s not.” I went quiet, but then spoke before I lost my nerve. “Why don’t you get in bed? We can pool heat.”

I said nothing, my breath suddenly shallow, my gut clenching with nerves. When he didn’t speak, I breathed out deep, a sudden thought coming over me.

“Never mind,” I muttered, feeling stupid for not considering how he might take that. How little he probably wanted to be close to me, even if only for practical reasons.

“You wouldn’t mind?” he asked, his voice unreadable but soft.
