Chapter Fourteen
It had been two days, and Gage had not been awake for more than fifteen minutes at a time. And even when he had been, he was utterly incoherent. When he was asleep, he was restless, and his bandages had become detached so many times that Honora had actually changed the last one while half-asleep and done it perfectly well.
At this moment, he was calm and asleep, which was a relief.
Sitting in the chair just across from the bed in his rooms, Honora stared at him, watching his chest move up and down with each breath. The bandages on his shoulder were secured by ones around his chest, and they exaggerated the measure of his breathing in a way that was oddly comforting to her. There was nothing more comfortable, she decided, than hearing the smooth sounds of her husbandâs breath.
Particularly when she had once feared it was gone.
The day of the blast at Wheal Stout, she had been terrified to hear its deafening sound. The women she had been working with had run with sure legs and stout hearts, but Honora had been frozen in place. She had known the risks of a mine; it had been spelled out for her quite clearly her first day visiting. But she had never expected to be present for an accident.
When Nellie Spargo had first placed the disaster images in her mind, Honora imagined herself as jumping into the fray with the rest of the women, tending to the wounded and fetching water for those who were doing the rescuing. She vowed to herself that she would not be afraid, but be determined, comforting, and full of hope for those who would need it. She would be the very best version of herself.
Yet when faced with the disaster, and actually confronted with the fact that her husband was below, she had been entirely consumed with fear, dread, and panic.
Belatedly, she had been able to move, though each step had been tremulous and timid, and she had searched the mass of exiting men for her husband, dreading that she would never find him. Each breath had felt more like a hiccup, and everyone had been so concerned with the men around them, no one paid her any attention or tried to help her find Gage. Not that she had asked for any help.
Words had been beyond her, too.
Then, as though Fate had decided at the very last moment to keep her heart from breaking, she saw him. Her feet had propelled her forward, and his name had been torn from her throat with a shrillness she had never expected herself capable of.
Those moments in his arms had brought her back to life, she was certain of it. And she was nearly just as certain now that she was well on her way to falling in love with her husband. It was possibly a dreadful development, but time would tell. He wouldnât love her, she knew that, too, but perhaps he might come to like her enough to delude her at times into believing it was love.
