JEMMA

I released the breath I didn’t realize I was holding as I eyeballed him. Anguish, regret, and fear coated his pale face while grief, optimism, and deliverance brightened mine as I slowly ambled to our bedroom. I needed to disappear. Quickly retreat because I could not stomach his presence any longer. When I entered my bedroom, thoughts of Ezekiel’s room invaded my brain. Flashes of his tongue and hands lustfully commandeering my body ignited an uncontrolled shudder.

“Jemma.” Quinton’s pained baritone caused me to scramble to pack a bag. Guilt suddenly entered my psyche. Was I a hypocrite? Incriminating Quinton for his behavior but pardoning myself for mine.

“Jemma, baby, you don’t have to leave. I’ll move to another room,” Quinton said as he caught my arm to pause my pursuit.

Baby, I mused, dryly chuckling. "You know, Quinton, I can't remember the last time you called me baby. Now here you are, the word rolling off your tongue with ease… or maybe it's just guilt."

"J! Come on. Please, bab—" He begged, but I abruptly interrupted him.

“No. No, thank you. I can’t be here. I need to think… breathe, and I can’t do that here. Our home is no longer a safe haven for me.” I scurried across the room into the bathroom, packing my toiletries as he settled on the lounge chair, watching me.

We lingered in awkward silence for at least thirty minutes. My pounding heartbeat was the only indication of life in the room.

“Mommy. Daddy. Where are you guys?” Shiloh's voice called out from the living room. My brows lifted in panic as I leered at Quinton, pissed that we had to share this bullshit with our daughter right now. I never lied to Shiloh, and I wasn’t about to start now.

“Knock, knock," she sang, nudging open the cracked bedroom door. "Hey, hey. What are y’all doing in here?” Shiloh plopped down at the end of the bed, just like she did as a little girl. “Ma, are you going on a trip?" she questioned, observing my luggage, then looking between me and Quinton. Her beautifully innocent eyes, identical to her father's, broke my heart. "Daddy? What’s wrong? Have you been crying?” She continued to nervously probe.

I stood stationary at the bathroom threshold, holding my toiletry case, staring at Quinton, waiting for him to speak. He was wordless, but I refused to rescue him this time. The minutes of silence felt like a lifetime passed us by.

“Shi, baby girl." He cleared the heaviness from his throat. "Um, me and Mommy are going to take a little break. We have some grown-up things to work through,” Quinton said, padding across the room to join her on the bed.

“A break? Why? What does that mean?" Her brows crashed together in confusion.

"Your mom needs to clear her head about a few things, sweetie. It’s just a break." He unsuccessfully endeavored to sound convincing, but my expression divulged the truth.

"Mommy, you're leaving Daddy? Why would you do that?” Shiloh spat, her green eyes glazed with tears.
