9:09 A.M.

“Richard, it’s Beau and Ted,” he called out as they approached the open front door of Richard Emmett’s house. They had spoken to Richard last night when he finally got around to returning their calls, and made a time to come and speak with him this morning, he should be expecting them, and yet the front door stood open, and there was no sign of the man.

“You think he’s dead?” Ted asked, his mind obviously going to the same place his had.

“I hope not.” If Richard—their last remaining suspect in Tommy Drisdale’s murder, and thus the deaths of Sheridan and Len, and the shooting the day before—was dead then where did that leave them? Where did they go next?

Guns drawn, they covered each other as they entered the disheveled house. There were a kitchen and dining area on their right, and they cleared it before circling around to the living room on the left where they saw his body.

Richard was lying sprawled on the couch, there was no blood that Beau could see, but that didn’t necessarily mean anything. With Sheridan he had staged her death to look like a suicide, and Len’s death had been made to look like an accident, so there was every chance he had tried to set this murder up to look like something else.

Ted nodded at him, and while his partner kept a gun trained on the man just in case it was Richard who was trying to set them up, Beau moved closer to the couch.

Just as he was reaching out a hand to check for a pulse, Richard jackknifed up.

Barely swallowing back a scream, Beau put his gun away. “We called out, Richard, when you didn’t answer we thought you were dead.”

“You gave me a heart attack.” Richard pressed his hand to his chest as he swung his legs down and rested back against the cushions. “I must have lost track of time.”

“Where have you been, Richard?” Ted asked, holstering his weapon and taking a seat on the other couch.

“I had to pop out of town,” Richard said vaguely, refusing to make eye contact.

Beau sat beside his partner. “We tried getting ahold of you and we couldn’t. You wouldn’t return our phone calls, and no one knew where you had gone. You disappear for a reason, Richard?”

“I didn’t disappear, I just needed to get away for a bit, clear my head.” Since Richard still wasn’t making eye contact, Beau didn’t buy that that was all there was to it.

“When did you get back to Aston?” Ted asked.

“Yesterday.”

“What time?” Beau asked, had he been here when someone shot at him and Poppy?

“Late, after dark.”

Losing patience, Beau fixed him with a hard stare. “Enough, Richard. Tell us what’s going on. Tommy Drisdale was murdered, and then it looks like Sheridan committed suicide, which we might have believed if not for a day later Len Wendelle supposedly died in an accident. As if that isn’t enough, then the woman who found Tommy and tried to save him was shot at.
