“You’re gonna wear those?” Julie looked at Raphe’s sneakers, an old pair of Vans.

“Yeah. They’re comfortable.” Raphe looked down for his own inspection, tipping his foot to the side. He remembered the day he bought them two years ago. He’d never dream of spending a hundred dollars on sneakers now.

“Maybe. But your feet are going to be killing you in a couple hours.” Julie walked over and nuzzled Raphe’s neck. “I have quite a hike planned for us.”

“You still haven’t told me where we’re going,” said Raphe, the end of his sentence softly evaporating. He loved when she kissed his neck. So gentle, barely a wisp, yet the touch of her lips there—right there—sent a charge through his entire body. The one spot made him melt. Only two of his lovers had ever found it. First Baptiste and now Julie.

“Ahhhh,” Raphe whispered. “Let’s just stay here and crawl back into bed.”

“But we just got out of bed,” Julie kissed again. “It’s already one in the afternoon. There aren’t too many hours of sunlight left.”

“Nature can wait,” Raphe moaned.

“The Rockports,” Julie said.

“What?”

“Put on the hiking shoes,” Julie breathed into his ear as she released him and walked into the kitchen. Raphe’s eyes followed her, soaking up the vision of that red hair with the same thrill he felt the first time he saw her out the window of 225 Folsom.

Had it been only two weeks since they first spoke? He remembered how stunned he was to bump into her that day in the heavenly, white lobby of DIABEAT-IT.

For months during his mail sorting duties, Raphe had rehearsed in his head all the clever things he would say when he finally had the chance to speak with her. He would be so witty, yet manly—the combination would sweep her off her feet and into his arms. But when the moment finally came, Raphe—the writer—found himself unable to form words.

“You OK?” Julie said after a few moments went by, and all Raphe seemed to do was make choking sounds.

“Uh, yes,” Raphe cleared his throat. “You just caught me a little off guard. I didn’t expect to see anyone here that I knew.”

“I work here. I’m Julie,” she said, extending her hand.

“I know,” Raphe fumbled to take her grasp. “Harrington told me your name. I’m Raphe.”

“Raphe? That’s an interesting name. If I remember right, that’s an anatomical term.”

“Really? I never knew that.”

A puzzled look came over Julie’s face, as if she just recalled something strange. She shook her head and let out a little laugh. “No, that can’t be it.”

“Oh.”

“You headed out?”

“Yeah. I was just talking to the people up in your HR department. . . about some work.”

“Really? You’re a scientist, too?”

“No, computers. Dot-com. But you probably knew it was something like that since I work behind the desk at 225 Folsom.”

“I was just on my way to have some herbal tea,” Julie smiled. “Wanna join me?”

Would I ever! Raphe wanted to scream, but instead managed to control himself and put out a restrained, but enthusiastic, “Sure.
