âYouâre gonna wear those?â Julie looked at Rapheâs sneakers, an old pair of Vans.
âYeah. Theyâre comfortable.â Raphe looked down for his own inspection, tipping his foot to the side. He remembered the day he bought them two years ago. Heâd never dream of spending a hundred dollars on sneakers now.
âMaybe. But your feet are going to be killing you in a couple hours.â Julie walked over and nuzzled Rapheâs neck. âI have quite a hike planned for us.â
âYou still havenât told me where weâre going,â said Raphe, the end of his sentence softly evaporating. He loved when she kissed his neck. So gentle, barely a wisp, yet the touch of her lips thereâright thereâsent a charge through his entire body. The one spot made him melt. Only two of his lovers had ever found it. First Baptiste and now Julie.
âAhhhh,â Raphe whispered. âLetâs just stay here and crawl back into bed.â
âBut we just got out of bed,â Julie kissed again. âItâs already one in the afternoon. There arenât too many hours of sunlight left.â
âNature can wait,â Raphe moaned.
âThe Rockports,â Julie said.
âWhat?â
âPut on the hiking shoes,â Julie breathed into his ear as she released him and walked into the kitchen. Rapheâs eyes followed her, soaking up the vision of that red hair with the same thrill he felt the first time he saw her out the window of 225 Folsom.
Had it been only two weeks since they first spoke? He remembered how stunned he was to bump into her that day in the heavenly, white lobby of DIABEAT-IT.
For months during his mail sorting duties, Raphe had rehearsed in his head all the clever things he would say when he finally had the chance to speak with her. He would be so witty, yet manlyâthe combination would sweep her off her feet and into his arms. But when the moment finally came, Rapheâthe writerâfound himself unable to form words.
âYou OK?â Julie said after a few moments went by, and all Raphe seemed to do was make choking sounds.
âUh, yes,â Raphe cleared his throat. âYou just caught me a little off guard. I didnât expect to see anyone here that I knew.â
âI work here. Iâm Julie,â she said, extending her hand.
âI know,â Raphe fumbled to take her grasp. âHarrington told me your name. Iâm Raphe.â
âRaphe? Thatâs an interesting name. If I remember right, thatâs an anatomical term.â
âReally? I never knew that.â
A puzzled look came over Julieâs face, as if she just recalled something strange. She shook her head and let out a little laugh. âNo, that canât be it.â
âOh.â
âYou headed out?â
âYeah. I was just talking to the people up in your HR department. . . about some work.â
âReally? Youâre a scientist, too?â
âNo, computers. Dot-com. But you probably knew it was something like that since I work behind the desk at 225 Folsom.â
âI was just on my way to have some herbal tea,â Julie smiled. âWanna join me?â
Would I ever! Raphe wanted to scream, but instead managed to control himself and put out a restrained, but enthusiastic, âSure.
