Chapter Fourteen

Isaac

I should’ve known the too-quiet peace I’d allowed myself to sink into over the past few days wouldn’t last. I still hadn’t heard back from Pastor Campbell, but I was confident I’d be able to find some position in the church. I needed to call Dad again. I hadn’t spoken to him since I’d first seen Solomon, and I needed to tell him what was going on. I certainly hadn’t returned any of Reverend Mitchell’s calls. That one conversation at the bar was enough. No more missed call slips had come through to the apartment, but I was too smart to think that was the end of it. Somehow, I’d also managed to be naïve enough to think that was the end of it.

After church on Sunday, which I attended in person while Solomon slept in, I decided to go for a quick stroll down the street. We’d gotten far more comfortable around each other, but I figured we could use a break. Solomon’s apartment wasn’t large, and it felt decidedly cramped with us both there. I bet it felt enormous with me out of the way.

The church was only blocks away from the shopping district, and I wandered up and down the street. A wedding boutique, custom couture designs, a combination of both incredibly flashy and very sedate wigs and extensions. Multiple eateries, all along cobblestone streets. A very old-new feel.

My phone rang, and I smiled when I saw it was Treniece. I fumbled in my pocket for my headset, then answered. “Hey. How’s it going with the new guy?”

“This is how I know we have a good relationship,” she said, laughing. “Because it doesn’t even faze you to talk about me seeing someone else.”

“I mean, if he can get it up, he’s miles ahead of me.”

Her laugh turned to a choked-off snort, and that made me chuckle. Not as loudly as I probably would’ve in private, but it was good to hear her voice.

“You just calling to check in on me?”

“Ugh.” The laughter faded. “No. I wish. Shit’s popped off at home, and I needed to call you and tell you what’s going down. Folks are starting to talk.”

I frowned, which probably scared the poor couple sitting just inside the restaurant whose menu I was looking at outside. I held a quick hand up in apology and continued down the street. “What do you mean? What’s going on?”

“Isaac, the people are anxious. They want to know where you are.”

Heavy weight settled into my gut because that was a legit concern. I really had dipped out without a word, and that wasn’t fair to the kids back home. “Well, what’s Dad told them?”

“Only that you’re gone, and they need to talk to Mitchell for more questions.”

That didn’t make any sense. “Are they sure that’s the route they want to take? Why would they ask the Reverend rather than my father?”

“Exactly. People don’t like it. You know folks don’t like going to Mitchell for anything. Your dad is the nice and approachable one.
