...

“Do you remember what happened?” asked the detective, sitting on the couch across from Tokyo, who’s eyes stayed on the spot in the kitchen, where Mae lost her life.

“Tokyo,” called Ms. Della. “Did you hear him, sweetie?”

Tokyo, with her head cocked to the side, stayed staring across the room, cradling Space, rubbing her head.

The detective looked to Ms. Della and sighed, saddened by the empty, sadness in Tokyo’s eyes. “Ma’am… Do you think I should call someone to check on her mental state?”

Ms. Della frantically shook her head no, as she dapped at her eyes with a dampened tissue. “No. She’s… She’ll be okay. Please.. Detective Greene… give her a minute. Can’t you just come back tomorrow? Later… something?”

Detective Greene nodded and pushed up from the couch. “I’m sorry. If she happens to tell you something…” he fished around his pocket for a card. “Please give me a call.”

Ms. Della nodded and took the car from him. “I will. Thank you.”

Detective Greene walked out of the house and Ms. Della locked the door behind him. She looked over to where her best friend of thirty years had taken her last breath and began to bawl her eyes out. She couldn’t believe Mae was dead. She couldn’t believe she wouldn’t hear from her best friend anymore. Who would she share the neighborhood gossip with? Who would she go to church with now, every Sunday morning? The both of them shared the same grief of losing their husbands. Who would she retell stories about her and Samson with? Who would she laugh with, and cry with? Who would she pray with? Ms. Della had suffered a great loss, too. But she had to be strong. She had to be strong for her best friends granddaughters. Because she knew, that if she was the one who had lost her life, Mae would have done the same for her.

“Tokyo, sweetheart,” Ms. Della called out, as she waddled to the living room, gripping the handle of her cane. She was frail and sick. But when the neighbor, Joslyn called and told her something horrible had happened at Mae’s house, Della got out of bed, threw on her housecoat, and struggled her way all the way down the street.

“Why don’t you and Space go and get some rest?”

“Why did she trust her? I tried to tell her, Ms. Della. I tried to…I tried to tell her,” Tokyo softly said, as tears streamed down her face.

Ms. Della choked up on on tears, took a deep breath. “Mae had faith. Don’t you dare beat yourself up about this, sweetheart. Mae loved Sahara with her whole heart. She believed she could help her.”

Tokyo, with a trembling bottom lip, sucked in tears and began to hysterically cry, her shoulders bouncing with every sob. There was no way that she would ever recover from such a horrific loss.
