Chapter 17

Case

Lev and I sit in chairs in the corner of the room as Eito holds Bear as she sleeps. Manny and Luna come in a couple hours later. The hospital staff took pity on us around five in the morning and let us in. They let us know that Enzo woke around eleven at night. Which means Bear only got an hour of sleep at best. Best guess is that Mo woke around five, which is why Bear was on the floor holding his hand when we came in.

Lev has finally fallen asleep. He was in and out all night, much like Eito and I were. I texted Ellie last night to let her know what happened. She asked if I wanted her to come to the hospital. I did, but I told her no. She was the first person I thought to call. That realization shook me some. I realized this girl is special. A nurse walks in, she walks over to me. She whispers so not to disturb Lev and the others. “Casey Shanley?”

“Yeah.” I whisper back.

“Someone is here to see you.” She motions for me to follow her.

I see Eito watching. He whispers to me. “I have this.”

I nod and follow the nurse out. She directs me down the hall. I head out and when I come around the corner there is Ellie. She looks cute as fuck in some workout tights and my hoodie. She is holding a bunch of coffee cups and there is a large, handled bag on the floor. I head straight for her.

“I hope this is okay? I just… I brought breakfast. I didn’t know how many of you were here.” Her voice is shaky. She is nervous. I know she is worried she crossed a boundary. I take the tower of to go coffees from her hands and set them on a counter to our side. I wrap my arms around her body and tug her into me. I curl myself down and press my face to her shoulder.

I let out the tears I have been fighting back. Her arms wrap around me tight. “Shhhh. Case. I’m here.” Her fingers stroke against my hair, my neck, my ears. Her other hand holds my back tight.

“Thank you. Thank you for being here.” I grunt against her neck.

“I wouldn’t be anywhere else.” She whispers against the side of my head.

I pull back from her. She pulls the sleeves of my hoodie down over her hands, she uses them to brush the dampness from my cheeks. “I wasn’t sure if I should come, but my gut told me to just come. I called in sick… if you want me to stay. It’s okay if you don’t.”

“Please stay. Please.” I grip her small tight waist in my hands.

“I will. I won’t go anywhere.” She smiles gently at me. I nod.

I turn back to the nurses’ station. “Can we bring food in?”

The nurse looks. “Well… uhm… you know what, yeah, go ahead.”

I take a stack of the coffee and the bag from the floor.
