Attitudes

Simply put, it is impossible to be without biases and preconceptions about fathers. For any professional working with men, especially caseworkers in the very difficult and emotionally charged realm of child protective services, it is important to recognise and understand one’s own biases and preconceptions (Rosenberg and Wilcox, 2006, p. 25).

The presence of violence alleged, assumed or established cannot be avoided; however, Rivett argues that approaches that work with violent male carers should go:

beyond the violent label. These men will continue to be carers for their children and their relationship with those children will outlast most of the interventions provided therefore their role as carers must also be addressed (Rivett, 2010, pp. 198–9; emphasis in original).

So how does positive practice proceed in such circumstances? The next discussion breaks down the elements of intervention into assessment, engagement, positive work and strategies for supporting positive practice.
