Support for Raising the Next Generation and the ‘Last Resort’

Poor work/life balance and negative income redistribution

As for support for raising the next generation, let us look at Table 4.3, which shows individual and summary indicators of work/family reconciliation policies and relevant flexible work arrangements. This table was adapted from Table 4.9 of the OECD 2001 Employment Outlook (OECD 2001).21 The indicators are scaled to have mean zero and standard deviation unity. The composite index of summary indicators for the 18 nations in the comparison group range from Sweden’s 3.3 down to Greece’s -3.4. Japan is second to last with a composite index of -2.9. The next lowest group are the Southern European nations of Italy, Spain and Portugal. The Anglo-Saxon countries occupy the middle ranks, and the Continental European nations are scattered throughout. The highest-ranking nations are Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands.
