PRO TIP

You don't want to be warm and friendly but then become cold and uncaring as soon as you get what you want. Those kinds of incongruent actions can cause your target to have a negative feeling.

Principle Eight: Social Proof

In 1969, Dr. Robert O'Connor performed a study called “Modification of Social Withdrawal Through Symbolic Modeling” (Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1969, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1311030) The subjects of this study were young children who had social anxieties and were withdrawn in school.

The children were divided into two groups. Group 1 was shown a video that contained no level of social interaction. Group 2 was shown a video that lasted about 23 minutes and involved children being very social with positive results.

The children in group 1 had no alteration to their behavior, while the children in group 2 had marked improvement in their social interactions. Not only that, but even when the doctor returned six weeks later to observe the children, those in group 2 were now leading the pack in social interaction.

The doctor was able to modify a potentially life-long path to being socially withdrawn by using something called social proof. The video proved to the children in group 2 that it was good, safe, and even beneficial to be more social.
